"Somawathiya National Park is one of the four national parks assigned under the Mahaweli River improvement project. Somawathiya Chaitya, a stupa said to contain a relic of the tooth of the Buddha, is arranged inside the recreation center. The recreation center was made on 2 September 1986, having been initially assigned a natural life asylum on 9 August 1966. The recreation center is home to numerous megaherbivores. The public park is found 266 kilometers (165 mi) north-east of Colombo.
Somawathiya National Park lies in the deltaic flood fields of the Mahaweli River and contains the intersection where it is forked into two branches. The two branches are the Mahaweli River, which streams north into Koddiyar cove and the lesser Verugal Oya which streams north-east into the ocean. The focal riparian floodplain is highlighted by numerous old waterway channels and contains scattered 'villus', the water filled bowls around among the verdant fields. There are 20 such manors situated in the recreation center. Somawathiya and Flood fields public parks are significant ensured regions for the wetland arrangement of Mahaweli River flood fields. The excellent natural surroundings of the rich alluvial hidden layer upholds an abundant untamed life.
The memorable Somawathiya Chaitya is situated on the left bank of the Mahaweli River. The stupa was named after Princess Somawathi, the sister of King Kavan Tissa, and the spouse of provincial ruler Prince Abhaya. The sovereign Abhaya assembled the stupa to revere a relic of the tooth of the Buddha, which was in the ownership of Arahat Mahinda, and named the stupa after the rulers. Stupa is an undeniably mainstream traveler and journey objective because of its notoriety as the site where marvels - light emissions and surprising specters - are frequently revealed. The recreation center is one of the four public parks put away under the Mahaweli River improvement project. The other three public parks being Maduru Oya, Wasgamuwa and Flood fields. Somawathiya is coterminous with Flood Plains National Park and Trikonamadu Nature Reserve. Hurulu Forest Reserve, a piece of which is a biosphere hold, is connected by the western arm of the recreation center."
