Reviews Summary

Gal Bangalawa is praised for its unique ancient stone architecture, colonial charm, and beautiful natural setting with a pool and garden, making it ideal for peaceful getaways. However, event planning can be challenging due to strict noise rules and limited management support, requiring guests to bring their own supplies. Booking also requires university connections.

"This is a great place to stay and spend your vacation! β˜€οΈπŸ‘ It offers a beautiful, vast natural environment with a swimming pool, a spacious garden, and relaxing spots. The interior is stunning, featuring ancient stone architecture that adds to its charm. πŸ›οΈβœ¨ You can truly feel the uniqueness of the place.

However, if you are planning a party here, you may face some difficulties. πŸ₯³ The management does not cooperate much with event arrangements, so most of the time, you are on your own. You may even need to bring extra chairs, glasses, spoons, and other essentials from outside. Also, keep in mind that speakers are not allowed after 10:30 p.m., and extra lights must be turned off by the same time. πŸŒ™πŸ”‡

In my opinion, this place is more suitable for a peaceful stay rather than hosting a party. If you're looking for a relaxing getaway surrounded by nature, this is a perfect choice! 🌿🏞️

Note: Reservations must be made through the University of Peradeniya. πŸ«βœ… Rooms are available for overnight stays."

"Nice place to stay... Great place to party!

We had our Pera E/91 Batch Reunion in April 2024 at the Gal Bungalawa (or the Stone Bungalow) of the University of Peradeniya, which is located on a great location close to Mahakanda Town, few hundred meters off the Peradeniya-Galaha road. This premises is used by the Vice Chancellor to entertain distinguished guests who visit the University, and to provide accomodation to such guests. At other times, the university staff can book this place for accomodation or specific events.

Gal Bungalawa is a unique building made almost entirely of rocks and wood. Everything is designed in colonial style. For example, there are two fireplaces which is very uncommon in modern day houses in the island. Some walls almost fully covered in wood. There are rooms with 6, 4, 3, 2, and single beds.

There is a permanent staff who will cook delicious food for you. Unlike most other places where water is supplied as bottles, you get a free supply of fresh water.

The toilets were clean, but there were no toiletries such as soap, toilet paper, toothpaste or shampoo. Some had clear windows but they are positioned higher.

There is ample parking space and you can park your vehicle under the huge banyan? tree to protect from the sun.

The pond was in a dilapidated state. May be it is cleaned fie special occasions.

There is an old fountain which is no longer usable.

We partied until midnight and the staff constantly supplied us tasty food.

It is a great place to stay and party, but need to book the place through a university staff member."

"A charming old tea estate bunglow. Built in 1939. Upkeep is OK but can be better. Quite nice at night. Can accommodate about 50 people for a function. At present owned and operated by the University of Peradeniya."
