St. Stephen's Church is praised for its beautiful, well-maintained Gothic Revival architecture and peaceful location by the Negombo lagoon and Dutch Fort. Visitors appreciate its historical significance as an Anglican church with a colonial decree and its active spiritual life, particularly the 8 AM Sinhalese service. Some note the 10 AM English service is less attended.
"Very well attended Sinhalese service at 8am.
English service starts at 10am but not so well attended. There were only 6 people minus the folks serving in the service. 2 are foreigners and 4 locals who came very late for the service.

"This beautiful and quaint old church lies adjacent to the Negombo lagoon and the ruined rampart of the ancient Dutch Fort and carries an equally unique history in itself.
It's an Anglican church completed in 1877 when Sri Lanka was under British rule and consecrated on 31st July 1880.
The church is indeed a beautiful example of the Gothic revival architectural style. A stone cross of small size is fixed on each tiled ridge at the top and the north transcept has a vestry and a bellfry added later.
This church is perfectly preserved and is active upto date since it's consecration.
The calm and peaceful location steeped in history adds grace and beauty to the city of Negombo."
