What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Whisky Point offers a picturesque setting with unique pagoda accommodations and praised Italian cuisine. However, the surf break's consistency is questionable, and strong winds are a common feature. Service can be slow, and safety measures at some accommodations are basic, but the warm hospitality often makes up for these drawbacks.
"Nice view. Amazing waves are there although off season. Kids also enjoy at that place"
Rangana Ekanayake
"It’s a nice beach but unfortunately the waves are really strong and brake harshly so it’s not possible to swim. I also did not see any surfers at this point at the beach and saw in the surfers guide that this spot has not worked for surfing for a couple of years."

"Good value resort with 5 star service. Nicola and Anna are wonderful hosts who couldn't have been more welcoming. Gregarious, fun, and always keen to get to know the guests and join in the fun. The site itself is picturesque, and the pagodas do look as seen online, though note there is almost always a strong wind.
Whiskey Point as a surf break, I am told, has not worked for 3 years following a big storm which caused a huge shift in the sand banks. We had booked it with a view to being to walk into the surf from the hotel. This was still theoretically possible as you could walk to Pottuvil Point, but PP is a much tricker wave than others in the area. For beginner -> intermediate, elephant rock is suggested, which is a good 30 minutes by tuk tuk. The partnering surf camp, Safa Surf, was very good but the break was exceptionally busy.
The Italian food is truly excellent, the other options could be better and are expensive relative to prices in Arugam. The service is also very slow, with scrambled eggs on toast with some roast veggies coming with a 45 minute time warning on the menu. All the staff are nevertheless lovely and very friendly and helpful.
The rooms are comfortable enough without being luxurious, and are good value. The safety isn't great - a chest is provided to hold valuables, which is stored in the open beneath the pagoda. The padlocks are old and worn and could easily be cut through.
Finally, during the summer season there is an all-night rave from 2100 until 0600 on a Thursday or Friday night at the next door hotel. Nicola and Anna dealt with this excellently, as sadly the matter is out of their hands. Hopefully this will be stopped by next season.
Overall, I'd say this is a good budget option, with Nicola and Anna's charisma and dedication rounding it up to a 4 star."
