What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Sarkofagen for its rewarding summit views and the unique opportunity to find leaf fossils. The surreal experience of seeing the Northern Lights from the peak is a major highlight. However, some find the hike itself to be 'pretty rubbish' if not for the unique natural elements.
"An amazing hike early November. We went with Spitsbergen Adventures and we enjoyed it so much! It was a very windy day, which made it super cold. My cheeks still tingle with a bit just writing about it. We meandered the snow and rocks up to the ridge where we got to sign a guest book with a pokemon pen! Unfortunately, the wind and snow made the views next to nil, but that's ok, it was still such a fun and memorable time. We had fun playing in the snow, relaxing next to a glacier, and exploring the moraine landscape. We'd totally recommend our guides Noemi and Richard if you're looking for a safe and good time up!"

"This prominent peak (490 meters) is easily visible in the Longyeardalen (Longyear Valley) and in much of Longyearbyen. From its plateaued summit, one can obtain a nice view of Longyearbyen and nearby mountains. Along the hike, we observed leaf fossils clustered in a glacial moraine.
There are no trails taking one to the summit. And because the hike lies beyond the town limits of Longyearbyen, one needs a trained guide, armed with a rifle and a flare, to protect against a possible polar bear encounter (the guides are trained to use weaponry to scare polar bears and to prevent a polar bear encounter with humans).
I booked my hike through Hurtigruten Svalbard and could not have been happier with the result. The guide also provided snow shoes to everyone in our group (necessary as some snow drifts were a meter-and-a-half deep on 22 June 2025) and lunch at the summit."

Polar Bear Safety: A Crucial Aspect
Booking with reputable tour operators like Hurtigruten Svalbard ensures you are in capable hands. They provide experienced guides who are knowledgeable about polar bear behavior and safety protocols. The presence of a guide significantly enhances the experience by allowing you to focus on the stunning scenery and natural wonders without the constant worry of potential encounters.
Remember that the goal is to avoid encounters. Guides are trained to use deterrents to scare bears away, not to harm them. This responsible approach to wildlife viewing is paramount in preserving Svalbard's fragile ecosystem and ensuring the safety of both humans and bears.
