What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find Himmelstalund Rock Carvings to be a very scenic and historically significant public space. The painted carvings are easy to spot, and the wooden walkways enhance the exploration experience. While the lack of nearby amenities is noted, the views and the sheer volume of ancient art make it a worthwhile visit for history enthusiasts.
"Very scenic and beautiful place, on a small hill surrounded by fields and very windy.
Its a public space so it's open to anyone.
While the areas surrounding it are developed, the site itself only has a wooden walkway and a couple of informational signs about the carvings to keep it as natural as possible.
The carvings cover a large area, and it was fun to hunt for them.
The carvings have been filled in with modern paint to make them more visible.
It's very worth a visit if historically significant sites are your thing, and the view alone is worth the visit.
There are no washroom amenities nearby however, so that's something to keep in mind."

"This is NOT the location of the rock carvings. Search „Hällristningar“ to find them in google maps. They are further northwest, across the highway in a giant park/recreation area.
These were very cool to come see in person. The Stadsmuseum also has some information on them in their prehistoric section on the top floor. Additionally, they have a little guidebook for sale in the shop for 30SEK in both english and swedish that I recommend. It tells you about other sites in the area around Norrköping with stone carvings which you can also visit. This is easiest with a car, since the transit does not too far west, where many more of the sites are. Nonetheless, about 1,700 of the 7,000 Hällristningar in the Norrköping area are at this location. So just coming to the site at Himmelstalund is quite an experience!"

"There is a huge amount of rock carvings in this area. They are highlighted by paint so easy to see. Also great arrangement with wooden foot bridges and trails etc. Also plenty of signs with information."
