"Trollhättan’s locks
The Trollhättan’s locks are an important part of Swedish historie. To avoid taxes from the Danish (everybody had to pay dweept to get to the East Sea), the Swedes decided at the end of the 18th century to make an inland pass through for ships from Stockholm to Gotenborg. The canal and locks were built by Swedish soldiers (50,000!) in the 19th century. Part of this “blue line” were a big amount of canal locks (nearly 60) to bring ships to the higher lakes and canals and back to the lower parts.
Tröllhattan has impressive new locks, but also the old ones are still there. In half a kilometer, the hight drops about 40 meters. Nowadays the locks are more a tourist attraction, for people who like impressive engineering (I do, my company does not). I was glad to take a peek at this impressive locks and loved it."
