What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors are captivated by the sheer power and beauty of Trollhättan Falls, especially during scheduled water releases. The blend of natural force with industrial history and the charm of Spikön island are frequently praised. While the falls aren't always flowing, the experience of a release is considered truly special and worth planning for.
"I visited Trollhättan during the Fallens Dagar festival (July 18–20, 2025), and it was one of the most memorable experiences of my time in Sweden. Watching the waterfalls when the floodgates open is absolutely breathtaking – the sound, the force of the water, and the overall atmosphere make it truly special. It's a fascinating mix of nature and human engineering.
Before the water release, I enjoyed a peaceful walk through Spikön, the small island right in the middle of the river. It’s a lovely green space with walking paths, benches, and beautiful views of the water from different angles. It’s also a great spot if you want a quieter experience away from the main crowd.
The area around the falls is full of history, with old locks, bridges, and viewpoints like Kungsportsbron and near the Olidan power station. During the festival, the whole place comes alive with live music, food trucks, family activities, and a happy, buzzing crowd.
Tip: Make sure to get to your viewing spot at least 15 minutes early before the scheduled water release – the best spots fill up fast, especially near the bridges and lock areas."

"Nice place - Once saw the release of water 40+ years ago. Nowadays there is no regular release of water in the falls. But it's still impressive.
2024 info: Due to the ongoing energy crisis there will be no release of water in the falls during the summer of 2024. This is because the water is needed for the energy production of the city's two water power plants. There will only be release of water in the falls during the Waterfall Days festival between July 19th to 21st."

"Great spot to check out. We happened to be at the bottom when they released the water."

The Engineering Marvel: Trollhättan's Water Management
The controlled release of water, while a spectacle for visitors, is also a carefully managed process. Historically, water was released regularly during summer months. However, due to factors like energy demands, these releases have become more sporadic, often concentrated around specific events like the Fallens Dagar festival. This highlights the dual role of the falls: a natural attraction and a vital resource.
Understanding this engineering aspect adds another layer to the visitor experience. It's a chance to appreciate the symbiotic relationship between nature and industry that has shaped Trollhättan. The sound of the rushing water is not just the roar of nature, but also the hum of human endeavor.
Experiencing the Fallens Dagar Festival
Beyond the main event of the water release, Fallens Dagar offers a diverse range of attractions. Visitors can expect live music performances, a variety of food trucks serving local and international cuisine, and numerous family-friendly activities. It's a community celebration that brings locals and tourists together.
If you're planning a visit specifically for the festival, be prepared for larger crowds. It's advisable to book accommodation in advance and arrive early to secure good viewing spots for the water release and enjoy the full festival experience.
