I have difficulty explaining what I felt when I crossed this bridge at night, except by saying that the experience combined exhilaration and the transcendent joy with a flicker of terror into the mixture of feelings that we call the sublime. That muddy water moves so swiftly and without relenting, carrying with it extravagant scraps of civilisation and even entire large trees that could not withstand its rush. On that night it felt as old as the world and much older than civilisation, a thunderous and almost sinister pre-modern force.
