The main terrace is no reservation, but often full.
I managed to find a table upstairs on the terrace outside the bar.
Grandhotel Giessbach stands above Lake Brienz beside Giessbach Falls, built in 1875 as one of Switzerland’s first grand mountain hotels.
Designed in a Belle Époque style with terraces and views across the turquoise lake, it was a landmark of early alpine tourism. Guests arrived by steamboat and ascended to the hotel on the Giessbachbahn, a funicular built in 1879 that still runs with its original wooden cars."

"We had a truly wonderful experience during our stay. The reception staff were warm, welcoming, and always eager to help, while the restaurant servers and bartenders were consistently polite and professional. It’s clear that everyone here takes pride in what they do, and their positive energy really shines through to the guests.
The rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated, with a timeless charm that feels like stepping into a classic film—unique, elegant, and comfortable all at once. The hotel’s setting is just as memorable, offering breathtaking views of the waterfall, lake, and surrounding hiking trails. Another highlight is the complimentary boat and funicular access, as well as Brienz Rothorn train which makes exploring nearby towns very convenient.
Overall, a truly special and classy experience that we would happily recommend."

"This is the most beautiful hotel we have ever stayed at. It’s a complete retreat away from the modern rush of life in a remote, incredibly serene and picturesque location over looking one of the best lake views you’ll ever see in Switzerland. Fantastic service by all staff who were welcoming, attentive. The view from the room was spectacular, food menu though small was perfectly curated and the wines were exceptional. This stay made us feel fully rested from a long day of travelling, and if ever you need to recharge and escape day to day life for some peace - this is the first place I would recommend. It is purely untouched, very traditional luxury."

A wide-angle lens is highly recommended to capture the grandeur of the landscape.

The Historic Grandhotel Giessbach
Guests often describe the experience as stepping into a classic film, with timeless charm, elegance, and comfort. The reception staff are noted for being warm and welcoming, contributing to the hotel's inviting ambiance. Even if you're not staying overnight, exploring the public areas and enjoying a drink on the terrace provides a taste of this historic luxury.
The hotel's setting is as integral to its allure as its architecture. Perched above Lake Brienz, with the powerful Giessbach Falls as its backdrop, it offers a truly picturesque and serene escape. This combination of historic grandeur and natural beauty makes the Grandhotel Giessbach a standout destination.
Experiencing the Giessbach Falls
Visitors can get remarkably close to the falls, feeling the mist on their faces and witnessing the raw energy of the water. The surrounding forest provides a lush, green contrast to the white spray of the falls, making it a photographer's paradise. Whether viewed from the hotel terraces or explored on nearby trails, the falls are an unforgettable sight.
During different seasons, the falls can present varied spectacles. In autumn, the vibrant foliage adds another layer of beauty to the scene, while in spring, melting snow can increase the water flow, making the falls even more dramatic. The accessibility of the falls, combined with their impressive scale, makes them a must-see attraction for anyone visiting the region.
Navigating Access and Transportation
Driving to the hotel is also an option, but recent changes have introduced a new vehicle access system. Drivers must now scan a QR code to purchase an online entry permit, which has reportedly led to traffic congestion and frustration, especially for those unfamiliar with the system or without reliable Swiss internet. This has led some to prefer the more traditional and less stressful funicular or boat access.
For those staying at the hotel, the Nostalgia Pass can be advantageous, often including free access to the funicular and potentially other local transport like the Brienz Rothorn Railway, making exploration easier. Planning your arrival method in advance can significantly enhance your overall experience.
