What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the unique blend of art and architecture, highlighting the beauty of both the historic villa and the modern annex. The Giacometti collection is a significant draw, and the on-site café is a beloved spot for relaxation. While some find the layout a bit confusing or tiring, the overall experience is considered enriching and visually stimulating.
"You really need to walk through this mental power place four times. First, to experience the architecture as a space – be warned, you need to be reasonably fit 😉 ... Second, to take in the details on the surfaces with your eyes, not forgetting the ceilings and the light from outside. Thirdly, the exhibition... to be honest, I didn't expect such breadth and quality. The entire staging of the art in the space and contrast is also brilliant. And fourthly, the café. A gem. But now back to the start: to get to the entrance, you first have to walk around both buildings, old and new. Up the stairs to the toilet, down the stairs to the cloakroom. Narrow corridors let the walls speak. Then, back in the "middle", you cross the new cube and descend deep into the interior to climb back up to the old villa. The main exhibition is like a task to be found, scattered throughout. But all this confusion brings you into contact and exchange with other art lovers. That is a very valuable aspect. The second point needs no comment. Open your eyes, look around 360 degrees, and marvel. I travelled a long way to see Diego Giacometti's actual exhibition, but I was hugely surprised to find my greatest discovery in the paintings of a Chur artist, and from a period (the 18th century) that I'm not particularly interested in. Weren't these kinds of paintings always painted and exhibited by men? From men from Italy, France, Spain, Holland, etc. Okay, I'm certainly no expert, but the fact that a woman once made her mark on the world here in Chur, which I don't think was particularly welcome, is pretty amazing. There are even more highlights installed in the basement of the Kubus, relating to another woman and another era. The objects and pictures themselves are worth the trip, but so is the way they are displayed. At the end, be sure to stop by the café to digest these impressions and transport yourself to yet another world. Super friendly service, great cakes and all in a beautiful space of air and colour."

"A beautiful museum with old and new architecture, villa La Planta built 1874-1875 and the modern extension built 2011. The Giacometti family's work is very present, amazing pieces a sight to art lovers. Not to be missed is La Planta café, simply beautiful"

"If you find yourself in Chur, Switzerland, I highly recommend the beautiful fine arts museum there. The minimalist concrete architecture is breathtaking inside. After enjoying the art, including several interesting mixed-media pieces, and appreciating the design of the floors, walls, and stairs, there's a wonderful cafe where you can sit, discuss the art, and soak up the ambiance. Highly recommend."
