What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Wipkingen is appreciated for its relaxed local vibe, charming cafes, and excellent access to the Limmat River for summer recreation. While the modern train station is aesthetically pleasing, its limited train service is a recurring point of criticism. Some find the dining options can be pricey, but the overall neighborhood charm and natural beauty are highly valued.
"Wipkingen Train Station: Newly built shining & nice. When it comes to connecitons it serves only one train i.e. S24 serving every 30 minutes. Takes 3 to 5 minutes to reach Zurich HB & those travelling to Airport, just in 8 to 10 minutes they are already getting off to take the flight.
Previously there was one central reservation that catered both platforms & passengers used two set of stairs on each side of station, with no lifts. With newly constructed layout is very different. It has split the platforms having lines in the middle however each platform has it's own set of stairs. The good thing I can see is addition of lifts however platform 1 has lifts on both sides while platform 2 has only lift on Nordstrasse, instead it has a ramp for wheel chairs. This can be issue for elderly passengers, as I have seen them struggling & limping to get up using ramp. This layout has it's own advantages however if one passenger comes to wrong side will have to actually go out of station to get to other platform that means on Nordstrasse he will have to climb two floors to go up & then back down on other side (or use lifts).
The other improvement is extension of platforms, so from Zone A to D they have now been extended from A to F. However platofrms being so long has only two information display sets on each side, this means passengers waiting for train in the middle (C,D) area cannot see the information for displaying being too far. I think SBB should put one display in the middle too. One more thing worth mentioning the roof, in old layout, roof covered pretty much 80% of platforms while new layout covers hardly 40%. Also the sitting capacity has also shrunk from three set of benches in old one to only one large bench in newly constructed one.
In conclusion I'd say newer layout may look nicer & clean, but from passenger point of view in terms of comfort & practical usage the older layout was much better. The only postive side is addition of lifts."

"It’s such a waste of structure since the trains only run twice an hour"

Wipkingen Station: A Modern Hub with a Past
However, the station's utility has been a point of discussion. Since 2014, only the S24 train line stops here, running every 30 minutes. While this provides quick access to Zurich HB (3-5 minutes) and the airport (8-10 minutes), the limited service makes the station somewhat redundant for many travelers. [^Review] This infrequency has led to comments about it being a 'waste of structure.' [^Review]
From a passenger experience perspective, the new layout has pros and cons. While lifts are a positive addition, the extended platforms (from Zone A to F) have fewer information displays, making it difficult for passengers in the middle sections to see train times. [^Review] Additionally, the roof coverage is reduced compared to the old layout, and seating capacity has shrunk. The station's design is visually appealing, but practical usage and comfort have been debated, with some preferring the older layout's functionality. [^Review]
