Reviews Summary

The Ashkenazi Synagogue is a significant historical site for Istanbul's Ashkenazi Jewish community, offering a glimpse into their heritage. While access can be limited due to its community-focused nature, its architectural presence is noted. Visitors are advised to confirm opening status and be mindful of its role as an active place of worship. Reddit

"You need to let them know in advance. Give them a call."

Troy Gearhardt

"The Ashkenazi Synagogue (Turkish: Aşkenazi Sinagogu) is an Ashkenazi synagogue located near the Galata Tower in Karaköy neighborhood of Beyoğlu in Istanbul, Turkey. It is the only currently active Ashkenazi synagogue in Istanbul open to visits and prayers. The synagogue was founded by Jews of Austrian origin in 1900. It is also the last remaining synagogue from a total of three built by Ashkenazim, as the population of Ashkenazi Jews accounts for 4 percent of the total Jewish population of Turkey. Visits to the synagogue can be made during weekday mornings and for Shabbat services on Saturday mornings."

Emine ÇELAK

"The only active Ashkenazi Synagogue left in Istanbul. The nearby Schneider Tempel was also an Ashkenazi Synagogue, but now functions as an art gallery. It is possible to visit if you make an appointment with the Chief Rabbinate of Turkey beforehand. Note that you must have ID with you when entering. Occasionally concerts and musical recitals are also held at this Synagogue which has great acoustics!"
