Reviews Summary

Ayvalık Old Town is praised for its beautiful historic Greek architecture and charming cobblestone streets, offering a delightful Aegean experience. Visitors enjoy the local cuisine, especially the famous Ayvalık toast, and the lively atmosphere of Cunda Island. However, some reviews mention issues with cleanliness, neglect in certain areas, and parking challenges, suggesting potential for further development and maintenance.

"Great historical and natürel place@!!!"

MURAT YAVAŞ

"Everywhere is reasonable and can be visited except for the Devil's Table. The stickmen have closed that place. I hope the municipality, which has usurped our viewing pleasure from the hill, will come out at some point and put the ridiculous parking logic in order here. If it has become a very touristic place, build a parking lot with cameras and bars, and those who stay for more than half an hour should pay a fee, or those who spend in the businesses should cancel the parking fee with their receipt. Parking fees should not be charged in such weather.
It would be logical to create a parking lot by the seaside in Sarımsaklı, there was always a parking problem there.
There is not much change in Cunda. It continues to be a place where you can spend time drinking alcohol in the evening and having ice cream during the day 🤓"

Gökhan B.

"A must-see destination in the Aegean region, with its ancient sea, beaches, and promenades adorned with Greek architecture, it's a place where you can enjoy your holiday. Prices are high, interest is very low, there's no maintenance, it's always the same old city, it's always the same old. A little change has begun. It's not clean, it's neglected. If it were taken over by a caring mayor, it would be a magnificent holiday destination. A place where you can experience gourmet toast and Aegean cuisine."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Architectural Heritage of Ayvalık

Ayvalık Old Town is a living museum of late 19th and early 20th-century Greek architecture. The Macaron Neighborhood is particularly famous for its well-preserved stone houses, characterized by neoclassical elements, intricate stonework, and distinctive wooden balconies. Many of these homes, built by wealthy Greek merchants, showcase a blend of Ottoman and European architectural influences. TikTokInstagram The streets themselves, often narrow and winding, are paved with cobblestones, adding to the historic ambiance. Instagram

While many of these grand houses have been restored and repurposed as boutique hotels, cafes, and shops, others show signs of age. This mix of beautifully maintained and slightly weathered structures tells a compelling story of the town's past. Instagram Exploring these streets offers a glimpse into a bygone era, with each doorway and window frame potentially holding centuries of history. Instagram

Beyond the Macaron Neighborhood, other areas like the Fevzipaşa neighborhood also boast similar architectural treasures. The municipality's efforts, alongside private restoration projects, are slowly bringing these historical buildings back to their former glory, making Ayvalık a significant destination for architecture enthusiasts. Reddit

Exploring Cunda Island (Alibey Island)

Connected to the mainland by a causeway, Cunda Island (also known as Alibey Island) is a vibrant extension of Ayvalık's charm. It offers a slightly different, yet equally captivating, experience with its own unique history and atmosphere. The island is known for its lively waterfront promenade, lined with numerous cafes, restaurants, and shops, making it a popular spot for evening strolls and dining. Instagram+1

Cunda Island shares the same architectural heritage as Ayvalık Old Town, featuring charming stone houses and narrow streets. However, it often feels more bustling, especially during peak tourist season. Visitors can enjoy fresh seafood at waterfront tavernas, browse local crafts, and soak in the Mediterranean vibes. The ferry service to the Greek island of Lesvos also operates from Ayvalık, with Cunda being a convenient starting point for such journeys. Instagram

Culinary Delights of Ayvalık

It's a must-try local specialty found in countless eateries across the town and on Cunda Island. Reddit

Beyond the famous toast, the region offers a rich array of Aegean cuisine. Expect dishes prepared with fresh, local ingredients, abundant use of olive oil, and a variety of mezes (appetizers). Seafood is also a highlight, with many restaurants serving freshly caught fish and other delicacies, especially along the coast and on Cunda Island. InstagramReddit
