Love Istanbul but hesitating to visit again

The Hagia Sofia situation is a shame indeed. However, Basilica Cistern has been renovated and it is absolutely gorgeous (still expensive though). You can take your mum on a Bosphorus tour, visit Dolmabahce and Topkapi. People are less tolerant and more agressive. We have always…

The Cistern of Philoxenos under Istanbul can store up to 40,000 m3 of water, and is built with 224 pillars by the Byzantines. (4096x2713)

I’ve been in the *Basilica cistern in Istanbul. It’s vast af and there are ‘pagan’ sculptures naughtily hidden away down there. The most terrifyingly beautiful massive stone heads of Medusa sit underneath the city in the cistern. E: Found the snaps I took during my visit…

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Binbirdirek Cistern for its impressive scale, atmospheric beauty, and historical significance. Many highlight the unique experience of exploring this ancient underground marvel. Some note that it can get crowded, and accessibility might be a concern for those with mobility issues, though booking in advance is highly recommended.

"I was here some time ago, so I specifically checked the map to figure out which of Istanbul's multiple cisterns I had visited -)
And it turned out to be the Binbirdirek Cistern (also known as the Philoxenos Cistern).

This cistern was the second-largest water reservoir in Istanbul after the Basilica Cistern. It was built in the 5th century CE, and the construction was overseen by Senator Philoxenos (hence the second name).

Later, after the Turks conquered Constantinople, the cistern fell into disrepair. For decades (if not centuries), it was used as a dumping ground for rubbish. Only in the early 2000s did people finally start to work on the cistern - cleaning it up, restoring it, and removing the waste.

Of course, it is very impressive - the columns, the soft warm light, the inscribed markings on the walls… it's simply stunning.
A true masterpiece of engineering.

This is the only Istanbul cistern I have been to so far, so I cannot compare the Binbirdirek Cistern to others.
But I can say for sure - this one is very impressive.

By the way, the name «Binbirdirek» means "1001 columns", although there are significantly fewer here — "only" 224 -)"

Alexander Vladimirov

"The place itself is amazing, not as impressive as the Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan Sarnici), but still stunning. Unfortunately, it’s charm is ruined by rows of ugly stalls that look like cheap trade fair booths. Yet, they still charge a steep entrance fee🤷🏻‍♀️. I get it, it serves as a venue for Dervish shows and a place for rent for events (or so I’ve been told), but if you choose to charge a fee for visiting a historic place - keep it as such, and arrange any modern infrastructure you need in a way it doesn’t ruin the atmosphere."

Anna Szyszka

"I fully recommend this cystern I was there around 13:00 at Sunday and I was here alone. It is beautiful and the enterance fee for non turkish tourist is only 10€ with is nothing compare to Basilica cystern enterance fee. I have to praising the cash register staff was very nice and speak English very well."
