"I was very glad I came to Gallipoli and experienced this place for myself and was fortunate enough to also have my kid with me. All the other parts of the peninsula I have rated 4 or 5 stars. My problem here was that I was left quite conflicted. In amongst all the tourists and busses was an elderly Turkish gentlemen who was quietly sifting through the sand and dirt. Every so often he would walk over to one of the garden beds and deposit something in the ground. We went and spoke to him and he was taking human remains that are being unearthed from the erosion, contributed by the tourists, and placing them in garden beds where they are less likely to be disturbed or worse still souvenired by tourists. He was previously part of a government group that were trying to find more of the remains in the area but their funding was cut so now he and some of the other people from the project do this themselves. The reality is that there are countless bodies that were never found and human remains still litter this peninsula. Is it respectful for tourists to now trample all over them? Then again these people fought so that our generation would have the freedom to come to places like this and this is how people remember. I just think more could be done to preserve the sanctity of these sites while still providing for the tourists."
