Reviews Summary

Visitors are often struck by the dramatic landscape and the remnants of ancient civilizations, particularly the castle and rock dwellings. However, many express sadness and disappointment over the submergence of the old city due to the Ilısu Dam, noting that the experience is now a shadow of its former self. The hospitality of the locals is frequently praised.

"We visited here, we were 4 friends because we couldn't find the way, we asked 2 local men there and they brought us here with them. They were very nice people, they took us on a boat and they also paid for the boat rental. Very hospitable people. Downstream, the remains of the old city after it was submerged in the river due to the construction of a dam. The views of the Tigris are spectacular. The boats leave regularly but will only do so when there are 20+ people on board, so if it is not busy, you may have to wait a bit."

"All that remains of the old town after being drowned by the river due to the construction of a dam downstream. Views of the tigris are majestic. The boats leave from new hasankeyf regularly but will only do so when 20+ people are on board, so you may have to wait a bit if it's not busy."

Michele Formica

"I believe it was a really nice place in the past, however the historic city of Hasankeyf has been submerged after a dam was constructed downstream on Tigris a few years ago. There are not many visible leftovers of the city. We wandered around the artificially built new Hasankeyf in 42 °C, which seemed less lively compared to other Turkish cities we saw on our way, and then left disappointed. If you expect to find the old Hasankeyf city, you probably won't be satisfied. It's a shame that a historical landmark like this was destroyed."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Impact of the Ilısu Dam

The construction of the Ilısu Dam on the Tigris River has dramatically altered the landscape of Hasankeyf. The dam's reservoir has submerged a significant portion of the ancient city, including many historical structures and archaeological sites that had stood for millennia. This has led to a profound sense of loss for the historical heritage of the region. The decision to build the dam was controversial, with many archaeologists and preservationists arguing against it due to the irreversible damage it would cause to invaluable historical sites. Reddit

While the dam was intended to provide hydroelectric power and water management for the region, its impact on Hasankeyf is undeniable. The remaining visible parts of the city, such as the castle and some rock dwellings, now stand as poignant reminders of what was lost. The boat tours offer a unique, albeit somber, perspective on the submerged ruins, allowing visitors to glimpse the scale of the historical city that now lies beneath the waters of the Tigris. Reddit

Efforts were made to relocate some of the most significant historical structures to a new site, known as New Hasankeyf, to preserve them from the rising waters. However, this relocation has not fully compensated for the loss of the original context and the vast majority of the ancient city. Visitors today experience a blend of the remaining above-ground historical marvels and the poignant story of a city partially lost to progress. Reddit

Exploring Hasankeyf's Ancient Rock Dwellings

Hasankeyf is renowned for its ancient rock dwellings, carved directly into the massive limestone cliffs that overlook the Tigris River. These dwellings served as homes, storage areas, and possibly even religious sites for inhabitants dating back thousands of years. Exploring these caves offers a tangible connection to the past and a glimpse into the lives of those who once inhabited this strategic location. Reddit

Many of these rock-cut structures are accessible, allowing visitors to step inside and imagine the daily routines of ancient peoples. The sheer scale of the carvings and the ingenuity required to create them with primitive tools are awe-inspiring. Some dwellings feature remnants of architectural details, while others are more basic chambers. Wear sturdy shoes, as the paths leading to and around these dwellings can be uneven and steep. Reddit

The views from these elevated positions are also spectacular, providing panoramic vistas of the river valley and the surrounding rugged terrain. It's a testament to the strategic importance of Hasankeyf throughout history, offering natural defenses and access to vital water resources. The experience of wandering through these ancient abodes is both humbling and fascinating. Reddit

The Hospitality of the Hasankeyf Locals

Travelers often highlight the exceptional hospitality of the local people in and around Hasankeyf. Despite the challenges brought about by the dam and the relocation of the town, the residents are frequently described as warm, welcoming, and eager to share their culture and history with visitors. Reddit

Stories abound of locals going out of their way to assist tourists, offering directions, sharing insights, and even providing unexpected experiences like boat rides. This genuine friendliness can significantly enhance the visitor experience, making it feel more personal and memorable. Engaging with locals, even with a language barrier, is often rewarded with kindness and a deeper understanding of the area. Reddit
