Reviews Summary

Guests rave about the Museum Hotel Antakya's groundbreaking concept of integrating an archaeological site with a luxury hotel, particularly praising the stunning mosaics and the unique experience of staying above ancient ruins. While the service and organization are noted as areas for improvement to meet international 5-star standards, the staff's dedication and the hotel's innovative design are consistently highlighted as major positives. Some minor issues like room temperature and water quality were mentioned, but the overall sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, with many eager to return.

"There's much to be done when it comes to bring the service to an international 5 star standard, but both management and staff are highly invested in creating a success story for this wonderful hotel.
The culture here is still a bit "insular", as it hasn't probably had the level of exposure to the world's comparable hotels, so while the location, design and goodness of the staff are incredible, the services offered and the way they are organised can be improved. The absolutely positive remark is that everyone takes in suggestions and commentary in a very positive way. Definitely recommended, look forward to coming back in the future and hopefully for the city find it rebuilt from the horrible tragedy the 2023 hearth quake has been (one of the biggest in modern days)."

"An unexpected and wonderful experience!

We were in Hatay for a short time and were looking for a good hotel. We ended up there by chance and were in for a complete surprise. When we entered the hotel, we didn’t expect that the entire first floor would be a real archaeological museum! The views of the mosaic floors and excavated ruins are simply wonderful.

The story of the hotel is also special: during the construction, archaeological discoveries that are thousands of years old were found. The engineers and designers had the idea to create something completely unique – and built the hotel on top of the archaeological findings. This gives the whole building an awesome atmosphere and value.

The rooms are not very large, but they are comfortable and stylishly furnished. The staff at the reception was extremely kind and professional. The whole experience was surprising and awesome. I have traveled for years and stayed in hundreds of hotels, but such an experience is rare.

I highly recommend it, if you are in Hatay or passing through, this hotel is definitely worth a visit!"

"Water in shower was smelly and salty. Administrator said it is secondary (purified) water.
Having museum underneath is making dusty surroundings."

The Unique Architecture: A Hotel Built on History

The Hatay City Museum, more accurately the Museum Hotel Antakya, boasts an architectural concept unlike any other. During the construction of what was intended to be a luxury hotel, significant archaeological discoveries were made, including the vast 4th-century mosaic. Instead of relocating the findings, the architects ingeniously decided to build the hotel over the ruins. This means that many of the hotel's public spaces and even some guest rooms offer direct views of ancient structures and the stunning mosaic floors. This integration of a living museum within a modern hotel creates an unparalleled atmosphere. InstagramReddit

The result is a space where guests can literally walk on glass floors above ancient Roman bathhouses or admire intricate mosaic patterns from their dining tables. The Hittite King Suppiluliuma statue also stands as a testament to the region's deep historical roots, prominently displayed within the museum section. This innovative approach has earned the hotel acclaim for its unique design and its commitment to preserving and showcasing history. InstagramReddit

Visitors often describe the experience as 'surprising and awesome,' highlighting how the hotel's design adds immense value and a sense of wonder. It's a place where modern luxury meets millennia-old history, offering a truly immersive journey into the past. Reddit

Exploring the Mosaics: A World Record Holder

The star attraction at the Hatay City Museum is undoubtedly its collection of Roman and Byzantine mosaics, most notably the 'world's largest single-piece mosaic.' This colossal geometric mosaic, measuring an astonishing 1,050 square meters, dates back to the 4th century AD. It was discovered during the construction of the Museum Hotel and is a breathtaking testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of the era. Instagram

These mosaics are not just flat decorations; they often formed the floors of grand public buildings, such as bathhouses, which have also been excavated and are visible within the hotel's structure. The intricate patterns, vibrant colors (though faded over time), and sheer scale of these ancient artworks are awe-inspiring. Visitors can spend considerable time admiring the details and imagining the lives of those who walked upon them centuries ago. InstagramReddit

While the hotel itself provides a unique viewing platform, the preservation and presentation of these mosaics are crucial. The hotel's concept ensures that these historical treasures are not hidden away but are an integral part of the guest experience, making the Hatay City Museum a must-visit for anyone interested in ancient art and history.
