Reviews Summary

Visitors find Karanlık Kümbet to be an interesting historical site, particularly appreciating the unique medieval architecture and intricate stone carvings. While not a destination for extensive exploration due to limited access and surrounding upkeep, it's considered a worthwhile quick stop, especially when combined with other Erzurum attractions. Some note the lack of accessibility and parking as minor drawbacks.

"These three tombs are another interesting part of the history of Erzurum and the Ottoman Empire. The area isn’t very clean, but you can walk around and take pictures. There’s no designated parking area. It’s definitely not a place to visit if you’re handicapped."

Richard K

"The place is worth a visit but I wouldn’t leave too much time aside for this. You can’t enter the actual tombs and there isn’t a lot around them so a quick visit would do the job."

S AS

"The Three Tombs are among the most beautiful examples of the monumental tombs in Anatolia. It is thought that the largest of the three cupolas belongs to Emir Saltuk and was built at the end of the 12th century. While it is not known who the other cupolas belong to, it is estimated that they were built in the 14th century. Emir Saltuk Tomb is made of cut stone. It has an octagonal body, a high drum and is covered with a flat cone that is a mixture of a dome and a cone. The triangular pediments, round arches and drum niches of the tomb made of two-colored cut stone have reliefs of animals such as bulls, snakes, bats and eagles. These reliefs resemble the zodiac figures in the Central Asian Turkish calendars. The human head carving between the bull horns in one of the niches is striking. There are pairs of windows on each of the four faces of the eight facades of Emir Saltuk Tomb. Geometric ornaments and flower and animal figures can be seen on the eaves of the entrance door on the north side of the tomb."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Architectural Marvels of Karanlık Kümbet

Karanlık Kümbet is renowned for its distinctive medieval tomb architecture, particularly the three monumental stone structures topped with unique conical roofs. The largest of these, believed to be the tomb of Emir Saltuk, stands out with its octagonal base and a striking blend of dome and cone elements. This architectural style is a testament to the craftsmanship and design principles of the late 12th and 14th centuries in Anatolia. Reddit

The construction utilizes cut stone, often in a two-colored pattern, adding visual depth. The tombs feature triangular pediments, round arches, and drum niches adorned with intricate reliefs. These carvings are not merely decorative; they depict a fascinating array of animals such as bulls, snakes, bats, and eagles, which bear a resemblance to figures found in Central Asian Turkish calendars, possibly zodiacal symbols. The presence of a human head carving between bull horns in one niche is particularly striking and adds a layer of mystique to the site. Reddit

Beyond the animal motifs, geometric ornaments and floral designs can be observed on the eaves of the entrance doors. The careful detailing on the exterior, including pairs of windows on the eight facades of Emir Saltuk Tomb, showcases a sophisticated understanding of both aesthetics and structural integrity. While visitors cannot enter the tombs, the exterior alone provides a rich visual experience and a tangible connection to the region's historical past. Reddit

The Enigmatic Carvings and Their Meaning

The stone carvings at Karanlık Kümbet are a significant feature, offering a window into the cultural and symbolic world of the medieval period. The prominent animal figures—bulls, snakes, bats, and eagles—are not random depictions. Their resemblance to Central Asian zodiac figures suggests a connection to ancient cosmological beliefs and calendrical systems that were prevalent among Turkic peoples. Reddit

These reliefs might have served a dual purpose: to adorn the tombs and to imbue them with symbolic protection or guidance for the afterlife. The bull, often associated with strength and the beginning of the year in many cultures, and the eagle, symbolizing power and divinity, are common motifs in ancient art. The inclusion of a human head carving between bull horns is particularly intriguing, hinting at specific mythological narratives or important figures. Reddit

Scholars suggest these carvings reflect a blend of indigenous Turkic traditions and influences from the regions where the tombs were constructed. The detailed execution of these figures, along with geometric patterns and floral elements, highlights the artistic skill of the era and the importance placed on funerary monuments. Exploring these carvings allows visitors to ponder the beliefs, artistic expressions, and historical context of the people who built and were buried in these impressive structures. Reddit
