Doğu Ekspresi’nde yer bulamayanlar için tren seyahati önerisi 📍 Güney Kurtalan Ekspresi Tren Ankara Gar’ından 11.20’de kalkıyor. Kayseri, Sivas, Malatya ve Diyarbakır üzerinden geçerek Siirt’in Kurtalan ilçesinde son buluyor. Doğu Ekspresi’nin popülerliği yüzünden artan fiyatlar ve yer bulamayanlar için çok iyi bir alternatif. Reviews Summary

This open-air museum offers free admission to a collection of retired steam locomotives and railway equipment, evoking nostalgia for many visitors, especially children. While the historical significance and accessibility are praised, concerns exist regarding the maintenance of exhibits and potential photography restrictions.

"Basically a landscaped scrapline. Exhibits in poor condition missing parts an in more or less as withdrawn condition under a faded coat of paint. Lacking even the most basic information about the exhibits. Took my camera but the Guards would not allow me to take photos and wanted me to go to TCDD press department in the city and get written permission to photograph. Wasted a 350km drive to see this “museum”. Unless you are wanting to see a particular loco here don’t waste your time. Spent around 30 mins here and apart from the security didn’t see another soul. Camlik museum near Izmir is so much better and friendlier."

Nick Sayajirao

"Really nice and well maintained old trains : we loved the visit and kids were just enchanted !"

Cecilia Pietrobono

"I was delighted to see the nostalgic locomotives of my childhood. But they're nothing like museums; they're just old locomotives left out in the rain and mud. They're not preserved at all. If the locomotives we manufacture had a history, routes, information, were a little more protected, properly maintained, and given a true museum-like atmosphere, I swear there would be a surge in visitors. There are many examples of this kind abroad. They're old, but I still think they're beautiful. It's pure nostalgia. There are no tickets at the entrance or exit; we asked a staff member somewhere and they said, "Go ahead and take a look." So, understand, they're just left there. I hope they get the attention and care they deserve from now on."

📸 Photography Enthusiasts

For photographers, the TCDD Open Air Steam Locomotive Museum offers a unique subject matter: large, retired steam locomotives in an outdoor setting. The sheer scale of these machines provides dramatic photographic opportunities. Reddit

However, be aware of potential restrictions. While casual photography is common, there have been instances where visitors were asked for formal written permission from TCDD press. The State of the Exhibits

The TCDD Open Air Steam Locomotive Museum showcases a collection of retired locomotives and railway equipment. However, visitor experiences regarding the condition of these exhibits vary significantly. Some describe them as 'well-maintained' and 'enchanting,' particularly for children, evoking strong feelings of nostalgia for childhood memories associated with these trains. Reddit

Conversely, other visitors express disappointment, noting that the locomotives are 'nothing like museums' and are left 'out in the rain and mud,' lacking preservation and often missing parts. This suggests that while the historical significance is present, the upkeep and presentation might not meet museum standards. The lack of detailed information about each exhibit is also a recurring point, making it challenging for visitors to fully appreciate the history behind each piece. Reddit

Despite these concerns, the sheer presence of these historical giants is a draw. The locomotives were reportedly moved here after 2013 due to high-speed train construction, implying a transition from a more formal museum setting to an open-air display. Reddit For enthusiasts, seeing these machines in their 'as withdrawn' condition can still hold appeal, offering a raw glimpse into railway heritage.

Photography and Visitor Experience

Capturing the grandeur of these old steam locomotives can be a primary goal for many visitors. However, the experience of photography at the TCDD Open Air Steam Locomotive Museum can be inconsistent. While many visitors take photos without issue, one account highlights a potential hurdle: being asked by guards to obtain written permission from the TCDD press department in the city to photograph the exhibits. Reddit

This suggests that while casual snapping might be tolerated, more serious or professional photography could require formal authorization. It's a point of friction that can detract from the visitor experience, especially if not clearly communicated upon arrival. The lack of a formal ticketing system and the 'go ahead and take a look' attitude from staff, while indicative of free access, also contributes to an atmosphere where rules might feel ambiguous. Reddit

Beyond photography, the overall visitor experience is shaped by the free admission and 24/7 access. This makes it an easy stop, but the lack of curated information and varying maintenance levels mean visitors should manage their expectations. It's more of an open-air display of historical artifacts than a traditional, information-rich museum.
