What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Gongzi Liao Fort is lauded as the most complete and interesting historic fort in Keelung, offering extensive ruins and stunning harbor views. While its historical significance and natural setting are highly praised, visitors note limited parking and minimal facilities, suggesting it's best explored during daylight hours.
"This is the most complete, and interesting historic fort in Keelung. There is a long pathway leading up to the ruins of the fort, and there are the remains of many buildings, as well as beautiful views of Keelung Harbor. If you are only able to visit one of these historic forts in Keelung, this is the best one, and certainly the most interesting. This is a National Historical Site. Parking is very limited.
The fort was built by the Japanese in 1904 after they landed in Keeling following the Treaty of Shimonoseki with Qing Dynasty. After the handover of Taiwan from Japan to the Republic of China in 1945, the fort was still used as a military facility and a garrison was placed there.
Keelung has a lot of forts. Because the Gangziliao Fort is hard to reach, it is relatively complete and is the largest and most complete fort in Keelung. This fort was built in 1904 to monitor the Badouzi area. The park is divided into three floors. The lowermost area has a command center. There are barracks, ammunition depots, etc. in the middle floor area. There are six bases in the uppermost area. The fort is also equipped with facilities such as lookout posts, barricades, command stations, blockhouses, tunnels, ammunition depots, water reservoir etc"

"A very quiet and peaceful place overlooking the ocean and mountains. Great views! And very close to nature and butterflies! May need some maintenance and some planning for better strolling the area. No solid toilet inside with only one mobile toilet near the entrance. And no parking lot either, so can only park along the way! Not many tourists visiting and some areas may be creepy when visiting after dusk!"

"It is a national historical landmark dated back to Ching Dynasty. During Japanese occupation, it was a military base, complete with forts, barracks, ammunition depots and tunnels. It has a wonderful view of the ocean. I came up here through the trail Inside the National Ocean University. It was a wonderful hike with absolute solitude."

Historical Significance of Gongzi Liao Fort
After the handover of Taiwan to the Republic of China in 1945, the fort continued its military role, housing a garrison. Despite its historical importance, the fort's remote location and limited accessibility have contributed to its relative completeness compared to other forts in Keelung. This makes it one of the largest and most intact historical military structures in the region, offering a unique window into Taiwan's colonial and post-colonial military history.
Visitors can explore the different levels of the park, which were designed for specific military functions. The lowermost area housed the command center, the middle floor contained barracks and ammunition storage, and the uppermost area featured six defensive bases. This layered design underscores the fort's comprehensive defensive capabilities and strategic importance.
Exploring the Fort Complex
The uppermost areas are home to six defensive bases, strategically positioned to provide commanding views and defensive capabilities. From these vantage points, visitors can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Keelung Harbor, the ocean, and the surrounding mountains. This scenic aspect is a major draw for visitors, offering a beautiful contrast to the fort's utilitarian military design. The presence of nature, including butterflies, adds to the serene atmosphere of these higher sections.
While exploring, be aware that some areas may require careful navigation due to the historical nature of the structures. The fort is equipped with facilities like lookout posts and tunnels, which add to the intrigue of the site. However, amenities like modern restrooms are scarce, with only a mobile toilet available near the entrance, so it's wise to come prepared.
