This is also the Kaohsiung Cathedral or more properly known as Basilica Cathedral of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary and has stood for over a century near the banks of the Love River since its groundbreaking in the year 1858 by the Kingdom of Spain from the Philippines when the Philippines was under Spanish rule. It is the oldest Church and minor Basilica in the whole of Taiwan. The building was patterned after the Manila Cathedral and finally completed in 1928.
It suffered damage during the last major earthquake in late 2022 and was closed for sometime to repair. When the Cathedral reopened, only Chinese masses are celebrated there now. Hopefully, they can hold masses again in English seeing the close history of the Philippines to the Cathedral so that the Filipino (and other foreign residents) Catholic population (which probably surpasses the number of Taiwanese parishioners here) can continue to enjoy the Cathedral.
As with old churches, the interior is not airy and bright. It has a very private confessional and has a statue of the Risen Christ in the main altar under the statue of the Madonna and Child which dates back to 1863.
I love churches with the Risen Christ because it boosts the optimism that I seek.
Toilets are located in the relatively large parking area. The location is also very central to other must see sights in Kaohsiung like the Music Hall, Love River, Pier 2."
