What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Reviews for the Jiufen Kite Museum are highly polarized. While some guests praise its affordability, great views, and friendly owners, a significant number report severe issues with cleanliness, including mold and stains, leading to a very negative experience. The lack of an elevator and numerous stairs are also common points of concern.
"Disgusting pillow that was mouldy and stained. When I asked to change it, the 4 others I was offered were badly stained too. I picked one that was the least stained. (Pillows like these should have been burned long ago.)
Consider using pillow protectors that can be washed after each guest and pillows sanitised.
Mould all over hair dryer cable also.
Ok the hot shower is hot and air-conditioning works well. But actually I need the heater not air-conditioning this night.
Is there actually an included breakfast?
The Google maps location isn't correct at time of writing. I've attempted to have it fixed.
The entrance is hard to find. Google maps places this hotel one building lower than it actually is. As a result we came from below and walked up umpteen steps unnecessarily.
You need to approach it from above. There is a bunch of brown signs from the main road and one of them will have this named on it. This is across the road from a more prominent hotel Jing Zhan. Use that as your locator. Then go uphill for a few metres and look across the road.
When you see those signs walk down the stairs and take the right "fork".
If you come after dark you'll need a torch to descend those stairs safely esp if you are loaded with suitcases.
This large establishment has no lift. Rooms are down more stairs. Yes there is wifi as promised. But it's slow.
Update: I got a brand new pillow the next day after speaking directly to the proprietor.
This room has potential which has been ruined by a really bad mould and cleaning issue. There are other areas in this room that has mould and dirt on it which the pretty stencils on the wall cannot overcome. Because no matter which side of the room I look at in the bedroom or shower I can see a mould or dirt issue.
I read the reviews which raved about this place and I was very disappointed at my "luck"."

"Overall I had great stay at the Kite Museum. Room was clean with what would have been a great view if it wasn’t so foggy. A few things for travellers to note:
1) This is the same establishment as CF Kite Homestay as advertised on some websites. The fact the road / hotel name doesn’t exist on Google was super confusing to me
2) where Google shows you is the location is NOT the location. From the location on Google you go directly up the stairs until you hit the next main road. From there you will see a sign pointing to a downward path to the accomodation. There are lots of stairs (like everywhere in Jiufen) so be prepared. Ignore where my sat nav says I am on the maps, the entrance is where the heart is in the picture below"

"This is absolutely the most disgusting accommodation we had experienced in Taiwan in these 15 days, and it has totally ruined our expectations and impression of Jiufen. There is nothing positive about this hostel. I would have given a zero star if allowed to give one.
This hostel needs to be shut down or be taken down from all booking platforms. From poor hospitality to horrible dirtiness of the room, I even wondered how they can still keep their license. The room is smelly, air con is dusty. We have been bitten by bed bugs overnight and moths flying in the room. I can see food leftovers or scrums in the gap between the wall and mattress laid on the floor. We had to escape super early from the morning just to get out of there.
For tourists who are carrying suitcases like us, please remember to communicate with the owner as he could/would not help you in any way of your luggage, and there are five floors in this building, let alone you need to manage to drag your luggage through 300 meters of steep hard rock stairs. If you fail to communicate your needs, you will be yelled at viciously.
Good luck with your stay there!"

The 'Spirited Away' Connection
While the film's director, Hayao Miyazaki, has not officially confirmed Jiufen as a direct inspiration, the visual similarities are so profound that it has become a major draw for tourists. Exploring the streets, especially as dusk settles and the lanterns begin to glow, truly feels like stepping into a scene from the animated classic. It's an experience that blends the charm of traditional Taiwanese architecture with the magic of animation.
