What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Taroko Gorge for its breathtaking, almost unbelievable natural beauty, often describing it as a top-tier scenic drive. However, recent earthquake damage has led to significant trail and road closures, impacting accessibility and requiring visitors to check current conditions. Some reviewers also note the challenging driving conditions on the narrow, winding roads.
"Must be one of the top 5 drives in the world. Absolutely amazing making me speechless. Do not miss an opportunity to visit. We had a couple of delays going through .... a tree had just fallen across the road but was cleared within 20 mins and work is going on to the cliffs causing road closures so only open at certain times so check. Otherwise just superb. Many of the trails are currently closed so check for hiking access."

"Review is for the highway through and up to the top at Lishan: the final boss of scary mountain roads in east Asia. Took us a solid 5 hours to go 150km with no (optional) stops, and I'm not a slow driver. Terrifyingly spectacular, edge of your seat roads the whole way. Plenty of enforced stops for roadwork: at one point we chilled for half an hour watching some dudes 200m up a cliff nailing wire mesh to the rock face.
Minus one star for the number of very fast oncoming cars refusing to yield or even slow down on single-lane sections. Try to get a small car with decent ground clearance, have a passenger to take photos for you because you can't stop in the good bits, leave the whole day for it, and be EXTREMELY careful!"

"One of the best roads I've ever biked on.
A motorcycle is required for the full experience
In one daylight hours u can climb from the Pacific Ocean shoreline to a 3200m elevation gain.
VERY important (2025)
The road is still being repaired and has its own schedule. If u don't meet this schedule, u risk being left in the mountains with no way to return until the morning.
There were high risks of rockfalls and landslides at the end of July 2025."
