"For mango lovers, this has to be one of the best places in the world. It's mostly wholesalers, but prices are half or a third of Taipei prices. There are also some stalls around the perimeter selling smaller quantities. Every kind of mango in season, including some we hadn't seen anywhere else, like 紀竹. Better quality mangoes than we've found elsewhere in Taiwan, so delicious. Amazing place, we came twice and left with probably 50kg. We saw jackfruit and lychees here as well.
Worth knowing, some sell by jin but only by the basket. You choose a basket and then they go weigh the basket, then they tell you the total price."

The Art of Mango Selection
When selecting mangoes, look for vibrant colors that are characteristic of the specific variety. A sweet, fragrant aroma is a good indicator of ripeness. Gently pressing the fruit should yield slightly, but avoid any that feel overly soft or bruised. Some unique varieties, like the 'Ji Mi' (rice mango), offer distinct textures and flavors that are worth seeking out.
Beyond just taste, consider the experience of buying. Many vendors sell by weight using a basket system. You select a basket, it's weighed, and then the total price is given. This can lead to purchasing larger quantities, so be prepared to enjoy your bounty or share it!
Beyond Mangoes: A Fruit Lover's Haven
For those with a sweet tooth, the market offers more than just raw fruit. You can find stalls selling fresh mango ice cream and gelato made with the market's own high-quality fruit. These treats are a perfect way to cool down and savor the intense flavors of local produce. Some vendors also offer fruit tree seedlings, allowing you to take a piece of Taiwan's agricultural bounty home with you.
Navigating the Market Dynamics
While the wholesale nature is evident, smaller stalls around the market's perimeter cater to individual buyers. These stalls offer a more accessible way to purchase smaller amounts of fruit. Even at these stalls, prices are significantly lower than in major cities like Taipei, making it a worthwhile destination for budget-conscious travelers and fruit aficionados alike.
The atmosphere is often described as lively and cheerful, with local farmers showcasing their produce. The 'smiley faces' of the local farmers are a recurring theme in reviews, adding to the market's authentic charm.
