While smaller than other parks, its unique habitats and the chance to see tree-climbing lions make it a memorable stop. Some find it less impressive if visited after larger parks, but its tranquility and scenic views are consistently praised.
"I originally wasn’t expecting much from Lake Manyara, but I was genuinely surprised by how much we saw, beautiful views of the lake and the birds and monkeys were adorable. The star of the show there are the elephants who aren’t afraid to let you know that you’re jeep is too close."

"Lake Manyara surprised us with how green and beautiful it is, totally different from the other parks we visited. We saw elephants up close, lots of baboons, zebras and giraffes. The scenery is amazing, especially with the big lake and forests. Not as crowded as other parks, which made it feel peaceful and wild. A perfect day or last stop on a northern safari route."

"I went to this park first out of tarangire, Serengeti and ngorogoro. It was definitely a good start to the safari. We didn't get lucky enough to see lions or anything like that.
The reason I gave this 4 stars, is because compared to the rest, I think this is easily the worst park out of the big ones in tanzania. Luckily this was my first one so it was still pretty amazing to see so many animals up close.
There were A LOT of monkeys and elephants. But I can see how if you do this last (it was last originally on my itenerary) you would be underwhelmed."

The Unique Ecosystem of Lake Manyara
The park's defining feature is the shallow, alkaline soda lake, which is a seasonal home to thousands of flamingos, pelicans, storks, and other waterbirds. The lake's fluctuating water levels influence the distribution of wildlife, drawing animals to its shores for water and feeding. The contrast between the lush forests, open savannas, and the expansive lake creates a visually stunning and dynamic landscape for visitors.
This diverse environment supports a surprising density of wildlife. The groundwater forests are particularly known for their large troops of baboons and the presence of elephants, while the open plains are frequented by zebras, wildebeest, and giraffes. The park's unique geological setting also contributes to its appeal, with hot springs found in the southern part of the park adding a geothermal element to the safari experience.
Spotting the Elusive Tree-Climbing Lions
Spotting these arboreal predators requires patience and a keen eye. Your safari guide will be instrumental in locating them, often scanning the branches of the large acacia and fig trees scattered throughout the park. The thrill of seeing a lion lounging on a thick branch, seemingly unfazed by the activity below, is an unforgettable safari moment. Even if you don't spot them, the possibility adds an exciting element to every game drive.
While Lake Manyara is renowned for this unique trait, it's important to manage expectations. Tree-climbing lions are not always visible, and their presence can depend on various factors. However, the park's diverse habitats and other abundant wildlife ensure that a safari here is always rewarding, even if the lions remain elusive.
Birdwatching Paradise
Beyond the flamingos, visitors can spot a multitude of other bird species. These include pelicans, storks, cormorants, herons, and various kingfishers along the lake. In the woodlands and forests, look out for hornbills, turacos, and raptors. The park's diverse birdlife makes it a prime destination for ornithologists and casual birdwatchers alike.
To make the most of birdwatching, it's advisable to visit during the wetter months when migratory birds are present, though resident species are abundant year-round. Bringing binoculars and a good field guide will greatly enhance your experience and help you identify the many species you'll encounter.
