"The experience of a lifetime. Do yourself a favor and don’t miss out on this place! When planning our trip to Thailand, we knew we wanted an elephant experience but wanted it to be the most ethical one. It is clear how much they love elephants at this place. We did the one hour feed experience. We started with a history lesson inside, washed our hands, picked out bananas, and were given a lesson on how to feed the elephants. Our family was the first of the day so we basically had a private session. Beware of fire ants! No one had issues but me, but just watch where you step :) The elephants really are gentle giants. We had a blast feeding them. Everyone in our crew, all the way from 2-61 years old, loved this experience. And Minty (like minty fresh) our guide was a caretaker, comedian, guide, and photographer all in one. The pictures she took for us were some of our best. She was even singing baby shark to get our niece to smile. This was a perfect experience, probably one of the best of our whole trip."

"Our day here was everything we could have dreamed of. Elephants are well cared for and the staff and caretakers show genuine love for these incredible animals! We were educated on how to identify the differences between Indian and African elephants and also told the history of each elephant, behaviours they show and why they do certain things. Highly recommend visiting this sanctuary as they are an incredible cause. They also offered a pad Thai cooking lesson and provided a delicious lunch before departure.
Thank you again to the entire team!"

Understanding Ethical Elephant Tourism in Phuket
When researching sanctuaries, look for clear indications of their mission. Do they rescue elephants? Do they have a 'no riding' policy? Do they allow elephants to roam freely? Reputable organizations often partner with established elephant welfare groups and are transparent about their operations. Websites like Phuket Elephant Sanctuary and Phuket Elephant Nature Reserve are frequently recommended by travelers seeking ethical experiences.
By choosing to visit a truly ethical sanctuary, you contribute to the conservation of these magnificent creatures and support responsible tourism practices. Your visit becomes a force for good, helping to end the cycle of abuse in the elephant tourism industry.
What to Expect During Your Sanctuary Visit
The core of the experience involves interacting with the elephants in a respectful manner. This often includes preparing and feeding them their favorite fruits and vegetables, walking alongside them through their habitat, and participating in mud baths – a favorite activity for the elephants and a fun, messy experience for visitors! You'll have ample opportunities to observe their natural behaviors and learn about their unique personalities from knowledgeable guides.
Many sanctuaries also offer educational talks about elephant conservation and the challenges they face. The day usually concludes with a delicious, locally-sourced meal before you are transferred back to your hotel. It's an immersive experience that leaves you with a profound appreciation for these gentle giants.
Photography Tips for Ethical Elephant Encounters
When you're interacting with the elephants, try to keep your camera at a comfortable distance that doesn't intrude on their space. Avoid using flash photography, as it can startle or distress them. Instead, utilize natural light and be patient to capture those perfect, authentic moments.
Many visitors find that their phone cameras are sufficient for capturing great photos and videos. If you bring a DSLR or mirrorless camera, consider using a zoom lens to get closer shots without disturbing the animals. Remember, the most impactful photos are often those that tell a story of genuine connection and respect.
