"Tl;dr: Gotta keep it real here - this really is a pretty loosely organized meditation program. I don't think it is a very good choice for a first meditation retreat if you are serious about learning and practicing meditation. The core teaching materials are flatly very bad and virtually impossible to follow or get much out of.
Teaching: This is the main substantive issue. The core lectures that are supposed to teach you how to do the meditation technique are shockingly bad. It is a recording of a live translation of a lecture given by Ajahn Buddhadāsa in ~1995.
- I don't speak Thai but it is painfully obvious that the original lecture is off the cuff as it wonders all over the place.
- The fact that it was a live translation further compounds the rambling as the translator is jumping around, going back to correct his own translation etc.
- As you would expect, the quality of the recording is quite bad.
It couldn't be more obvious that it would be so much better to edit the original lecture FOR CLARITY and make a new streamlined recording.
Silence is not enforced: It would be one thing if it was just some people at the edge of the compound in hushed voices but there was flagrant disregard for this rule that is supposed to be essential. A handful of the students got really cliquey very early into the retreat.
Lodging: The bed is literally a concrete slab. Not going to get a nice bed at any meditation retreat but this was another level. If you attend, bring some kind of inflatable mattress or the like as stacking meditation mats is not going to cut it.
The main positives: The grounds are amazing. The staff was warm and accommodative. I quite liked the morning readings.
I attended after having done 4 10 day Goenka Vipassana retreats. Not married to that approach, but if I compare the 2, it is honestly crazy how little thought has been given into teaching the technique of meditation at this retreat. I felt very badly for first time students."
