In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Legend of King Naresuan and Wat Worachettharam

Wat Worachettharam holds significant historical importance, primarily linked to King Naresuan the Great. Built in A.D. 1605 by King Ekathotsarot, it served as a memorial to his brother, King Naresuan, who had passed away that year. The temple's architecture, particularly the bell-shaped Chedi, is characteristic of the Ayutthaya period and further supports its connection to King Naresuan's era. Reddit

Local legends also tie the temple to King Naresuan's passion for cockfighting. It's said that he won a crucial bet involving a cockfight, which secured Ayutthaya's freedom from Burmese rule. The plaster roosters found at the temple are a testament to this legend, serving as symbols for visitors to pay their respects and remember King Naresuan's victory. Reddit

The Viharn houses a large Buddha image in the 'subduing satan' pose, also known as the 'sitting in the haunches' posture. This posture is particularly associated with Buddha images for Saturday, and King Naresuan was reportedly born on a Saturday. This connection further fuels the belief that the temple may contain the ashes of King Naresuan. Reddit

Experiencing Ayutthaya's Historical Park

Ayutthaya, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was once the glorious capital of Siam. Its historical park is a sprawling testament to its rich past, dotted with ancient temples, palaces, and ruins. Exploring this area offers a journey back in time, allowing visitors to imagine the grandeur of the former kingdom. TikTok+1

Many visitors choose to rent bicycles to navigate the park, which is an excellent way to cover ground and discover both the well-known landmarks and the quieter, more secluded sites like Wat Worachettharam. The relatively flat terrain makes cycling enjoyable, and it allows for spontaneous stops to admire the scenery or explore a temple that catches your eye. Reddit

When visiting, remember that these are active religious sites. While photography is generally welcomed, it's important to be respectful of worshippers and the sanctity of the temples. Dressing modestly, covering shoulders and knees, is also a good practice when visiting any temple in Thailand. TikTok
