Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Bou Ftata Mosque as the oldest in Sousse, appreciating its historical significance and unique early Islamic architecture, particularly the horseshoe arches and Kufic inscriptions. Some reviews note minor upkeep issues, but the overall sentiment highlights its beauty and importance as a historical landmark.

"The oldest mosquee in the city"

Kapa pello

"The Bou Fatata Mosque was built during the reign of Emir Abu Aqal between 838 and 841. It served as a model for the Great Mosque of Sousse, built twenty years later. Although there is no conclusive evidence, scholars speculate that the mosque was built for the Emir's private use. The rectangular mosque consists of a small prayer hall preceded by a portico. Horseshoe arches support the roof resting on rectangular piers. These arches are repeated on the exterior of the prayer hall, where the vaults support the entrance portico. A minaret was added above the northwest corner of the prayer hall later. The mosque's triangular facade is surmounted by Kufic inscriptions that include the date of construction. The mihrab is flanked by two small columns. The floor of the prayer hall is now slightly raised compared to its original construction."

"Bouftata Mosque (Sousse) is the oldest mosque in the city. The construction of this mosque, located in the old city of the jewel of the Sousse coast, is attributed to Abu Uqal al-Aghlab (ruled from 223 AH (838 AD) to 226 AH (841 AD)."
