Akköprü; is a historical bridge located in the Yenimahalle district of Ankara. The Ankara Stream passes under the bridge on the Istanbul Road route.[1][2][3]
History
The bridge, built in 1222 by the Ankara governor Kızıl Bey[4], is located at the Ankara junction of the Baghdad trade route that was used in the past.[5][6] During the Ottoman period, it was the point where caravans, as well as people going to the army and on pilgrimage, were sent off and set off. After being registered as an urban site on August 8, 1959, it underwent renovations at various periods.[7] During the repairs carried out by the General Directorate of Highways in the 1960s, it was renovated with concrete filling and closed to vehicle traffic. Akköprü, which was a part of an important transportation route for many years, is currently open to pedestrian use only.[8]
Architectural features
Akköprü is mainly built of andesite stone. During the studies, it was understood that reused stones were also used here and there and that the structure was intervened with cement-based mortars at some periods.[9] The two arches at the southern end of the bridge, which consists of seven arches, were covered by soil filling as a result of the works carried out by the municipality.[10] The body stones were largely renewed and the ground was covered with concrete. There are two inscriptions, most of which have been erased and damaged, on the western side of the bridge, where metal railings were later added.

Akköprü is located in the Varlık neighborhood of the Yenimahalle district of Ankara. It is opposite the ANKAmall shopping mall[11] and in front of one of the 12 stops of the first phase of the Ankara metro, which opened in 1997. One of the 12 stations of the metro is named Akköprü. The station is at the same level and is 1689 meters away from the İvedik station and 1158 meters away from the Atatürk Cultural Center station.[12]"
