Reviews Summary

Visitors are consistently impressed by the monumental scale and unique Brutalist design of Belgrade's Western (Genex) and Eastern (Rudo) City Gates. These structures are lauded as iconic architectural landmarks that define the city's skyline and represent a significant era of Yugoslavian modernism. While interior access is limited, their external presence is captivating for photographers and architecture enthusiasts.

"Visited this gate and walked south along both sides of the walls. These are such famous walls with many battles fought here. The neighborhood on the inside isn’t that nice, but you get to see sections of wall in disrepair in its, ‘natural’ state. Outside of wall has been mostly restored. Both views have value."

Timothy Vaught

"Just dropped by, but looks like one of the best preserved parts of the wall with some extensive and recent restoration going on. We walked here from the golden gate to the south, also well worth visiting. To the north the state of the walls is much worse so between these seems to be the best place to visit at the moment. One star dropped for the terrible pedestrian access from the main road. Easy to get to via bus."

Eliot Dixon

"Restored section of wall which is, apparently, accessible for free."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Brutalist Legacy of Belgrade

Belgrade is a treasure trove of Brutalist architecture, a style characterized by its raw concrete, monumental scale, and functionalist design. The Genex Tower (Western City Gate) and the Rudo Towers (Eastern City Gate) are prime examples, built during the socialist era of Yugoslavia. These structures were not just buildings; they were statements of progress and modernity.

The Genex Tower, completed in 1977, stands as a stark, imposing figure at the city's western entrance. Its design, featuring a residential tower and an office tower connected by a sky bridge, reflects the ambitious urban planning of the time. The Rudo Towers, finished in 1976, are a striking trio of residential buildings whose unique triangular configuration is often likened to the jaws of a lathe chuck, a deliberate design choice by architect Mihajlo Mitrović. TikTok+3

These buildings evoke a sense of socialist modernism and have become iconic symbols of Belgrade. While some parts of Genex Tower are abandoned, they continue to fascinate urban explorers and architecture enthusiasts, offering a glimpse into a bygone era and a distinct architectural movement. TikTok+2

Experiencing the Belgrade Gates Today

Visiting the Belgrade Gates is less about entering a tourist attraction and more about appreciating monumental architecture from the outside. The Genex Tower is a mixed-use building, with residents still living in one part, while the other section remains abandoned, creating a fascinating contrast. It's a popular spot for urban exploration photography, though access to the abandoned parts is often restricted and potentially unsafe. TikTok+1

The Rudo Towers, also known as the Eastern City Gate, are purely residential. Their imposing presence on the skyline is best admired from a distance, perhaps from a park or a viewpoint across the city. Many visitors find the sheer scale and unique design captivating, even without interior access. TikTok+2

For the best experience, consider visiting during daylight hours to appreciate the concrete textures and structural details. Sunset can offer dramatic photographic opportunities as the buildings are silhouetted against the sky. Remember to be respectful of the residents if you are in the vicinity of the Rudo Towers. TikTok
