Planning Your Visit

Timing Your Visit to Blachernae Palace

Blachernae Palace, a significant Byzantine imperial residence, is best explored during off-peak hours to truly appreciate its historical remnants. Consider visiting early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and immerse yourself in the atmosphere. The adjacent Tekfur Palace offers a glimpse into Byzantine architecture, but be aware that current exhibitions focus on Ottoman pottery, which may not align with expectations for a purely Byzantine experience.

Navigating to Blachernae Palace

Reaching Blachernae Palace requires a bit of planning. The most recommended route involves taking the tram along the Golden Horn to the 'Ayvansaray' stop, followed by a 15-minute walk up towards the Constantinople walls. Allow an extra 10 minutes to reach the nearby Chora Church. While the palace itself offers historical insights, the current exhibitions are a point of contention for some visitors, with a focus on Ottoman artifacts rather than Byzantine history.

Reviews Summary

Blachernae Palace is appreciated for its historical significance and the impressive intact structure of Tekfur Palace, offering a glimpse into Byzantine architecture. Visitors enjoy the panoramic views of the Golden Horn and the opportunity to walk along the ancient Constantinople walls. However, many are disappointed by the current exhibitions, which focus on Ottoman pottery rather than Byzantine history, and the lack of detailed historical information provided onsite.

"Blaherne Palace is a palace complex in the Ayvansaray neighbourhood of the Fatih district of Istanbul, used as an imperial residence during the Byzantine period. It was built around 500 AD, made the main residence by Alexios I in the 11th century, and improved during the reign of Manuil I. It was damaged during the Latin invasion in 1204, repaired during the late Byzantine period, but abandoned in the 15th century after the conquest of Constantinople. Tekfur Palace, located to the south of the palace, is the only intact part of the complex, that has survived to the present day. It is recommended to visit if you like the history."

Maya Tryfonova

"The palace is best and easiest reached by tram, which starts from the square in front of the Egyptian Bazaar and travels along the Golden Horn. You have to get off at the "Ayvansaray" stop and then walk 15 minutes up past the walls of Constantinople. Another 10 minutes uphill is the amazing Chora Church.
Entrance to the remains of the palace costs currently 450 Turkish Liras for foreigners and is payable by card only. The building has been beautifully restored and gives an idea of representative Byzantine architecture. You can go up the adjacent tower where a view of the Golden Horn is offered.
The unfortunate thing is that there is nothing inside that tells visitors about the centuries-old history of the building. Not a word about who built it and when, not a line about the important events that took place there or about the Byzantine emperors who inhabited the palace. Instead, Istanbul Municipality has placed an exhibition of Ottoman pottery and tiles in the halls, which simply don't belong there and are of no interest to anyone. I think this was on purpose. Istanbul is happy to make money out of its Byzantine past, but it always highlights Ottoman supremacy. It's a state policy.
Pity! The museum could have been much more interesting. Now it's just some walls."

Emil Raychev

"It's somewhat out of the way, but it's a really cool little museum. There's a lot of access to the walls, walking up them, etc. Overall, this was one of the main palaces used by the byzantine emperors in the time of Theodosius II, and it was later used by the Ottomans on a much smaller scale. There are a few exhibits inside that are interesting but are Ottoman focused. You get a great view of Istanbul. The tickets are incredibly cheap at 24 TL a piece. It's well worth the trip."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Byzantine Legacy of Blachernae Palace

Blachernae Palace was a significant imperial residence during the Byzantine Empire, with its origins dating back to around 500 AD. It rose to prominence as the main imperial residence under Alexios I Komnenos in the 11th century and saw further improvements during the reign of Manuel I Komnenos. The palace complex was a center of imperial life, witnessing numerous historical events and serving as the seat of power for centuries. Its strategic location on the western edge of Constantinople made it a vital part of the city's defenses. Reddit

Despite its historical importance, the palace suffered damage during the Latin invasion in 1204 and underwent repairs in the late Byzantine period. However, it was largely abandoned after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453. Today, the most intact part of the complex is Tekfur Palace, which offers a glimpse into the grandeur of Byzantine architecture. Visitors can explore its restored halls and imagine the lives of emperors and courtiers who once resided there. Reddit

While the structure itself is a testament to Byzantine engineering, many visitors express disappointment that the current exhibitions within the palace focus on Ottoman pottery and tiles, rather than providing in-depth information about its Byzantine past. This shift in focus is seen by some as a reflection of state policy, prioritizing Ottoman heritage. Nevertheless, the sheer historical weight of the site and the opportunity to walk along the adjacent Walls of Constantinople make it a compelling visit for history enthusiasts. Reddit

Exploring the Surrounding Area

The area around Blachernae Palace offers more than just the palace ruins. Adjacent to the palace are the formidable Walls of Constantinople, a UNESCO World Heritage site that once protected the city. Walking along these ancient fortifications provides a tangible connection to Istanbul's layered history, from its Byzantine glory to its Ottoman era. The views from the walls are also quite impressive, offering a different perspective of the city. Reddit

Following your visit to the palace and walls, a pleasant experience is to walk down towards the bay. This leads you to the Ayvansaray neighborhood, known for its charming, crowded small streets. Here, you can discover local life, find authentic eateries, and soak in the atmosphere of a less tourist-centric part of Istanbul. This area provides a contrast to the grand historical sites and offers a more grounded experience of the city. Reddit

For those interested in further historical exploration, the renowned Chora Church (Kariye Museum) is also located a short distance uphill from the palace. It's famous for its stunning Byzantine mosaics and frescoes, offering a rich artistic and religious dimension to your visit. Combining Blachernae Palace with a walk along the walls and a visit to Chora Church provides a comprehensive historical and cultural immersion in this part of Istanbul. Reddit
