Reviews Summary

Gaziantep Castle is a historically significant site offering impressive city views and a museum detailing local wartime history. Visitors appreciate the surrounding bazaar and the castle's well-preserved structure. However, some find the staff rude, the site not handicap-friendly, and payment methods restrictive.

"If your in the city this attraction is well worth a visit. If you are really interested in the history, there is alot of text you can read while walking through the museum part of this site on your way up to the tip of the castle. Once you get on the top most of the area you can't really look out, but there's a viewing area were you can look and take photos. 30-60 min is enough at this attraction in my opinion. If I were to come back with friends I would probably take them to see it, but seeing it once is enough. Overall a nice attraction that's worth a visit."

Gaziantep Castle: A Historical Overview

Gaziantep Castle, or Gaziantep Kalesi, boasts a history stretching back over two millennia. Its origins trace to the Roman period, initially serving as a watchtower on a mound. The structure evolved significantly during the Byzantine era, particularly under Emperor Justinian in the 6th century CE, who is credited with giving it its current circular form. The castle's circumference is approximately 1200 meters, with a diameter of about 100 meters. Instagram+1

Throughout its existence, the castle has been a silent witness to numerous historical events, including periods of Seljuk, Ottoman, and even French occupation. During the Turkish War of Independence, it played a crucial role, and a small museum within the castle commemorates this significant battle. The castle's resilience is remarkable, having endured centuries of conflict and change, though it suffered severe damage in the recent earthquake. InstagramReddit

Today, the castle stands as a symbol of Gaziantep's rich heritage. While its historical significance is undeniable, its current state after the earthquake means visitors are experiencing a different, albeit poignant, aspect of its long history. The surrounding area, with its traditional shops and eateries, adds to the historical ambiance. TikTokReddit
