Reviews Summary

Hamaxia Ancient City offers a free, adventurous exploration of overgrown ruins with stunning panoramic views. While the lack of signage and challenging terrain can be frustrating, the sense of discovery and the raw historical atmosphere appeal to intrepid visitors. It requires imagination and preparation to fully appreciate this untamed site.

"They should make some path in there. The vegetation was so strong that I didn't see much. Walls and maybe church. Interesting place though and free. Needs also little bit walking in the end to get there."

Jani Ollikainen

"We gave up. The last part of the road was very steep and in very poor condition"

Helle Damgaard Andersen

"There are no signs to the ruins. Rent a car or scooter, as it is difficult to get there on foot. You can get almost to the very top of the mountain by scooter. Dress appropriately - pants, jacket and boots. At the top, everything is densely overgrown with bushes. In some places there is some semblance of a path, but many of the ruins are off to the side and in the thick of the bushes. From the highest point of the mountain, from the wall where the geodetic sign stands, there is a stunning view of the surrounding area. The ruins themselves are in a deplorable state and in some places you can see attempts by looters to dig something up. In the surrounding area, they have already begun to tear down neighboring hills for planting or buildings, I would not be surprised if some of the ruins have already been destroyed along the way."

The Challenge of Access and Exploration

Hamaxia Ancient City presents a unique challenge for visitors due to its remote location and dense overgrowth. Unlike well-maintained historical sites, Hamaxia requires a spirit of adventure. Many reviewers highlight the lack of signage and the need to 'break through' vegetation, likening it to exploring Mayan ruins in a jungle. Reddit This means that while the site is free, the effort required to reach and explore it is significant. Visitors are strongly advised to wear sturdy shoes and long pants to protect themselves from thorns and rough terrain. Reddit

The journey to the ruins often involves a steep ascent, and some parts of the access road can be in poor condition. Renting a car or scooter is frequently recommended to get as close as possible to the mountain's base, minimizing the strenuous hike. Reddit Despite these challenges, the reward for those who persevere is a sense of discovery and breathtaking panoramic views from the summit. Reddit The ruins themselves are in a state of disrepair, with attempts by looters noted in some areas, but the potential for imagining the city's past remains. Reddit

Imagining Hamaxia's Past

Visiting Hamaxia Ancient City is an experience that heavily relies on the visitor's imagination. The ruins are not preserved or reconstructed, leading some to describe them as being in a 'deplorable state.' Reddit However, this very condition can be part of the allure for those who appreciate raw, untamed historical sites. Reviewers suggest that by imagining the city in its prime, perhaps around the 8th century BC, the exploration becomes an 'incredible satisfaction.' Reddit

While you might find remnants of walls, a church, and scattered stones, the dense vegetation often obscures much of the ancient city. Reddit This can be frustrating for some, but for others, it adds to the mystique. The site offers a glimpse into a forgotten past, where the remnants are slowly being reclaimed by nature. The potential for future reconstruction is a hope for some visitors, but for now, it's a place to connect with history through a more rugged and personal exploration. Reddit
