"There are several Orthodox churches that you can visit in the Balat Neighbourhood. The Church of St. Mary of the Mongols (Meryem Ana Rum Ortodoks Kilisesi) is located on the north side of the red brick and imposing Fener Rum Kız Lisesi (Greek Orthodox Girls School).
You will find an unassuming entrance (see picture) along Firketeci Sk. Not sure what normal opening times are and if you find the gate door closed, ring the buzzer and ask if you can see the church.
During our visit, a nice young lady came and allowed us into the complex. She opened up the late 13th-century church, the oldest with continued services in Istanbul. Within there are old paintings, icons, a nice iconostasis and chandeliers. Allow 5+ minutes to walk around and browse. The attendant will show you out after your visit.
Not the easiest church to find in Balat and potentially not open to visit as well. However, it is worth a try to see if an attendant is available to let you in to see the nearly 750 year old Church of St. Mary of the Mongols if you are sightseeing in the area and enjoy seeing historic churches."

The church itself is pleasant with nicely decorated artwork but the staff are unfriendly, don’t speak any English and are pacing around waiting for you to leave. At least it’s free.
