Reviews Summary

Visitors are consistently awestruck by the Monastery's stunning location and historical significance, calling it a 'hidden gem' with breathtaking views. However, many note the challenging climb up numerous stairs and the multiple fees for parking, shuttle, and entry, which can be a deterrent for some.

"Finally got the chance to visit this stunning historical place. The place attracts so many tourists so get ready for a really busy area. You cannot enter with your car, but only with the shuttle managed by the site itself. The ticket price is 70 Turkish lira per person. Once you reach there you have to get ready for a long stairs to reach the ticket office. Definitely I will not recommend it for elder people or people with low fitness and children under eight years. It is located in the mountain with an elevation of more than 1000 m. Breathtaking views during the journey to the monastery. Classified as one of the most important historic venues in Trabzon."

"The castle is beautiful and steeped in history. However, reaching the top requires climbing a significant number of stairs, making it quite a challenging ascent. We had to pay for several things, including entrance fees, a minibus ride to help us get up, and access through a checkpoint. Fortunately, the costs were not too high."

"That experience was a life time experience. I had seen photos before, but it was a hidden gem. When you climb all the stairs to see a monks city, very well preserved was very exciting. Highly recommended experience. My favorite part was to see the church, but very sad to see the murals were destroyed by the first visitors. Seeing all the priest rooms, the kitchen, the library made me to understand the life style of the monks that lived there for many years. The monastery is placed in an amazing nature that takes your breath away."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History and Legend of Sumela Monastery

Founded around AD 386 during the reign of Emperor Theodosius I, the Sumela Monastery (also known as the Monastery of the Virgin Mary) is a testament to Byzantine architecture and faith. Legend has it that two monks, Barnabas and Sophronios, were guided by a dream of the Virgin Mary to establish a monastery on this seemingly inaccessible cliff face. For centuries, it served as a vital religious and cultural center, attracting pilgrims and scholars alike. Instagram+2

The monastery's name, 'Sumela,' is believed to derive from the Greek word 'melas,' meaning 'black,' possibly referring to the dark color of the mountain or a revered icon of the Virgin Mary housed within. Over its long history, it underwent numerous renovations and expansions, with its most significant construction phases occurring during the Byzantine era and later under Ottoman rule. The intricate frescoes adorning its walls tell stories of biblical events and the lives of saints, offering a vivid visual narrative of its spiritual heritage. Instagram+1

Sadly, the monastery has also faced periods of neglect and vandalism, with many of its precious frescoes being defaced or destroyed by visitors over time. Despite these challenges, Sumela Monastery remains a UNESCO World Heritage tentative site and a powerful symbol of Turkey's rich historical tapestry. Its dramatic location and enduring legacy continue to draw visitors from around the globe, eager to connect with its profound past. TikTokInstagram

Navigating the Journey and Entrance

The journey to Sumela Monastery is an adventure in itself, often involving multiple stages. Visitors typically drive or take a taxi to the Altındere National Park entrance. From there, a mandatory shuttle bus service transports you further up the mountain, as private vehicles are not permitted to ascend directly to the monastery. This shuttle ride offers initial glimpses of the stunning natural landscape. TikTokReddit

Upon disembarking the shuttle, the final ascent to the monastery requires navigating a considerable number of stairs. This 'climb' can be quite strenuous, with estimates suggesting over 200 steps. It's crucial for visitors to wear comfortable footwear and be prepared for a physical challenge. The effort, however, is rewarded with breathtaking views and the anticipation of reaching the historic site. TikTokReddit

Once you reach the monastery complex, there is an entrance fee. While the costs for parking, the shuttle, and the entrance are generally considered reasonable by many, some visitors have noted the multiple payment points. It's advisable to have cash on hand for these various fees. TikTokReddit
