Reviews Summary

Visitors praise All Saints Church Hastings for its impressive medieval architecture, beautiful stained glass, and the magnificent Father Willis organ. The summer organ concert series is a particular highlight, drawing acclaimed musicians. The peaceful churchyard offers a welcome break, though some note accessibility challenges due to steps.

"Impressive grade 2 listed church dating back to the early 1400s. Notable features include beautiful stained glass windows, a Victorian organ, and a painting over the chancel arch. The churchyard is a pleasant place to take a few moments break from the bustle of town."

"Remarkable organ recital on this fantastic Father Willis organ. Which has great organists gathering from all corners of the cathedral world in July. Tonight it was David Newsholme who is Director of Music at Canterbury. Beautiful rendition of Bach's double fugue Passacaglia in C and the mighty chorale Sei gegrüßet . 2nd half some more fabulous playing and I particularly enjoyed Cesar Franck's Prelude, Fugue and variation. The programme ended with an arrangement of Danny Boy. Described by the performer as a like warm cup of cocoa. Bit more than that. Its what happens when an expert and a great tune are combined. Pure magic!

Tonight it was the turn of Dr Matt Geer. The Director of Music at All Saints. An unusual programme which explored an early piece from Robertsbridge Abbey to a sparse and melancholy Requiem from Abbé Liszt via Hindemith. And in the second half the mystical world of Pärt and himself. Great is the mystery of faith! To a finale in which I thought we had left the tonal world for good ..to be brought back to organ earth with a rousing Bach encore. Quite a journey from the young Doctor to explore some unusual paths in the organ repertoire. And for me. I should add that he was very well received by an enthusiastic in the audience. To whom he was very attentive. Which is always a good thing. Unlike one of the earlier performers in the series.

My final visit to All Saints was to hear Darius Battiwala on 25th August. I invited a friend from Charterhouse days who had been a very good oboeist ( although i doubt it has seen the light of day since c1976) and had expressed an interest in organ music. Well Darius, who is the Leeds City Hall organist and a very accomplished recitalist delivered the goods. With nobs on. This was a fantastic programme delivered by a top performer. After his introduction by our host for the series (who i think is married to the previous organist) he went straight into a dazzling rendition of Bach's Fantasia and Fugue in Gm. He then took the microphone and went in some detail about the rest of his programme in the first half which included a piece by Edward Lemare - who was to appear later in the second half - a Fantaisie by Saint-Saents and a lengthy sonata (1) by Guilmant which brought the first hour to a thrilling close. We stayed mainly in the latter half of the 19th century, We began with Florence Price and Cesar Frank and after 3 pieces by Alfred Hollins we came to the finale. And what a finale! Lemare's Carmen Fantasy. With the assistance of the recently retired All Saints organist almost all the stops were used on all the manuals of Father Willis's 1878 creation. This was a Bravura performance - accompanied by precise economical footwork - by a master practitioner. A thrilling end to a marvellous recital and a fitting finale to the concert series at All Saints."
