What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Alvecote Priory is appreciated for its peaceful, atmospheric ruins and tranquil canal-side location, offering a glimpse into history. However, visitors note its neglected state, overgrown grounds, and lack of facilities, with concerns about vandalism impacting accessibility.
"A really beautiful ruin which has sadly been neglected over the years. Very peaceful area and worth a visit.
Some concerns:
The nearby dovecote is a vandalised squat. The general site is quite overgrown and the grass obscures many of the remaining walls. There are no information boards there nor signs that point to this very valuable building. It is on the Heritage at Risk Register now and I worry about its future. It sounds like the local government isn't doing much to maintain it as a picnic site. Perhaps some sort of local volunteer group or cooperative could be the answer?"
Oliver Harflett
"Not much left from the priory but the tranquility of the location and the beauty of the neighboring canal makes it worthy of a visit."
Peter Kovacs
"Don't expect a 'tourist-ready' conserved ruin with information signs etc. It is just the remaining stones and wall fragments in the middle of an overgrown field. There was a small car park here, but even that has been closed for some time due to vandalism. So it is what it is, but still interesting if you are visiting on foot and don't mind a bit of overgrown vegetation."
