What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the Appleby Frodingham Railway Steelworks Rail Tours, calling it a 'fantastic gem' and an 'absolutely fantastic day out.' The value for money, extensive exploration of the industrial site, and the knowledgeable, friendly volunteers are consistently praised. While some tours might not feature 'flaming furnaces,' the close-up view of operational steelworks and railways is a major draw. The main drawback is the rapid sell-out of tours, necessitating advance booking.
"Absolutely fantastic day out on over 100 miles of working industrial railway. Our tour lasted over four and a half hours including the refreshment and museum stop. Amazing value for £20!We visited every corner of the vast 2000 acre site, once home to three separate steelworks. Unfortunately we didn't see any flaming furnaces but we did get very close to the action. The volunteers are helpful and informative. There is nothing else like it. We will definitely return"

"This is a fantastic gem and a must to get an opportunity to see inside Scunthorpe Steelworks. The brake van tour gets you to places you can't see on the pacer train. You park by the main offices and it's a short walk to meet the train at the station. There is a brief toilet stop before the tour begins taking in the rail production facility, the blast furnaces, the steel wire and rod mills and the old parts such as the coke works. There is a stop for lunch with sandwiches, sausage rolls, crisps and a selection of hot and cold drinks and a chance to look in the sheds of the depot, even a chance to look closely at the logo you ride on. Then off again round the works.
It is run by volunteers with the money raised put into the railway. The guys are knowledgeable, pleasant and nothing is a problem for them. You can take photos but they ask that you don't share any on social media of inside the steel works, there are posters in the trains to say this. You can of the train at the station or depot. Keep an eye on the Facebook page or website for future tours as they sell out fast. Best 4 hours spent in Scunthorpe!"
