"It's hard to believe this beautiful, serene place is only an eight minute train ride from Birmingham New Street. Its a great historical building; each of the rooms look stunning and the gardens are well cultivated and maintained.
I was here on a hot summer Saturday afternoon (the last weekend of June)., and was surprised it wasn't very busy. Yes, there were other visitors around, but it never felt crowded. Maybe the £10 admission fee is off-putting to some?
The visit here was definitely worthwhile and felt like a tranquil oasis from the crowded Birmingham city centre. The volunteers are very knowledgably of the building's history and the gardens are a great place to relax after touring the rooms withing the grand hall."

"Aston Hall was our wedding venue. It's a fantastic building, full of character and wonderful spaces. While booking was a bit of a faff, the staff on the day were excellent and did everything to make the event run smoothly while still being great fun, including accommodating a harpist and two bands. We had canapes on site that were also superb. If you're looking for somewhere a little different, Aston Hall is highly recommended."

Other reported apparitions include 'The Green Lady' and a former servant boy accused of theft. Visitors often report chilling encounters, unexplained noises, and a palpable sense of unease in certain areas of the hall. Special ghost hunting events are sometimes organized, offering a more immersive and spooky experience for those brave enough to seek out the paranormal.
While the historical accounts of Sir Thomas Holte, the hall's builder, describe him as a man of harsh temper, the spectral activity is often attributed to the tragic events and strong emotions that have unfolded within its walls over centuries. Whether you're a skeptic or a believer, the legends add a unique layer of intrigue to any visit to Aston Hall.
Aston Hall's Role in the English Civil War
The great oak staircase, a magnificent feature of the hall, still bears the visible scars from cannon strikes during this siege. These marks serve as a tangible reminder of the violence and turmoil that swept through the country and impacted even grand country houses.
Interestingly, King Charles I himself visited Aston Hall in 1642, shortly before the war escalated, in an attempt to persuade Sir Thomas Holte to join the Royalist cause. However, Holte was not swayed, and the hall subsequently became a site of conflict.
Architectural Significance and Design
The hall is characterized by its grand scale, ornate detailing, and the typical features of Jacobean style, including large windows and elaborate gables. It was built to impress and showcase the wealth and status of its owner. Some modern interpretations suggest advanced 'Tartarian' technology was used, though historical records attribute its construction to more conventional methods.
Despite its historical significance, Aston Hall is also noted for its surprising tranquility, offering a serene escape within the urban landscape of Birmingham. Its well-maintained gardens complement the architectural splendor, making it a beautiful place to explore.
