Reviews Summary
Visitors find Benwell Roman Temple a surprisingly interesting and free historical site, appreciating its unique location within a modern housing estate. While small, its significance as the only temple dedicated to Antenociticus is a key draw. Some note the lack of extensive ruins, but its historical context and proximity to other sites like the Benwell Vallum Crossing and the Great North Museum are highly valued.
"Benwell Temple is one of the few remaining features of Hadrian’s Wall to survive within Newcastle. The temple was built sometime before the year 180, and was dedicated to the little-known god Antenociticus. It once formed part of a settlement supporting nearby Benwell Fort. Nothing remains of the fort, but Benwell Vallum Crossing is just a couple of streets away (2 min walk) on Denhill park road, worth a look if you're already here."

"Lovely little Roman temple nestled in a modern estate."

"This was the final stop on my great West-to-East quest to visit all the Hadrian's Wall Sites. As others have said, it's right in the middle of a housing estate, but is quiet and peaceful nevertheless. The most interesting bit is that this is the only site ever discovered dedicated to this particular god, Antenociticus. If you want to see the head of his statue discovered here, it's in the Great North Museum, not far away and well worth a visit. (Entrance to the museum is free!)"
