One of the Scottish gardens I had wanted to visit for a very long time was 'Little Sparta' the garden of the poet Ian Hamilton Finlay. Here is a short clip from this Friday's programme #montydons britishgardens

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Little Sparta for its unique blend of art, nature, and poetry, describing it as a peaceful and thought-provoking sanctuary. While some find the artistic and poetic elements challenging or pretentious, most agree it's a truly special and memorable experience, especially for those interested in contemporary art and garden design. Reddit+1

"The garden itself was really beautiful, so peaceful, I enjoyed wandering and finding little hidden pathways leading to various sculptures and artwork. The staff were lovely. But I think there is something to be said about the difference between "thought-provoking" and just down right confusing. The poetry in my opinion just wasn't very good, arguably kind of pretentious, which would be fine if it was just some dude's garden and I hadn't paid a £16 entrance fee. Some of the inscriptions were hard to make out due to age, and many, especially the Greek referencing works went straight over my head unfortunately as an uneducated layman.
Overall, a unique and tranquil experience that I probably would've enjoyed more without the hype and the entrance fee."

"I've been aware of Ian Hamilton Finlay's work for ever, and had been wanting to visit Little Sparta for a long time, so a brief holiday in Melrose was the ideal opportunity. It was absolutely worth the wait. But it's important to realise that this is not a sculpture garden, where individual pieces of work are sited in a landscape (usually for a limited time) and it is possible with a bit of diligence to see and photograph every item - I know, I've done that a few times! The whole garden is the artwork, and throughout the site are hundreds of interventions by the artist which only belong and make sense in this space. It is impossible on a single visit to spot every one of these interventions, so much better not to try, and simply immerse yourself in the place, engage with Finlay's thoughts and obsessions and humour as you go round, and become part of the garden. The Little Sparta website provides an excellent introduction to what the place is about, and also has loads of info about access. It's not as well-known as it should be, but it's not obscure either - it's listed on p.67 of the Gardeners' World magazine 2-1 booklet. Absolutely recommended to anyone interested in contemporary art or contemporary gardens or how ideas can be intertwined within a landscape - or just wants an enjoyable time in a lovely setting."
