Penjerrick Garden- wowww such a strange but wonderful hidden gem. It was overgrown and had that same abandoned feeling that escot had (few posts ago).. but there’s a house on this land, although we saw no movement. Abandoned old glasshouse laying empty, a sign on the bridge we crossed saying it wasn’t safe until we came back over it 😅, ancient trees and huge tree ferns, masses of tangled and moss ...

Day 3 of the Cornwall trip, and it's a really interesting visit to Penjerrick Garden to round things off. This garden was fascinating to explore - the lower garden especially is minimally maintained, giving a real jungle wilderness atmosphere. Penjerrick part 4 On the terrace we met a second couple who had enjoyed it almost as much as we had, we tried to glimpse the distant sea through the trees, (possibly visible in the depths of winter) and they joined us in crawling into the fernery just for fun and searching for ages to find the honesty box. They left money under the veranda, Mr T finally found the box in the undergrowth. The house...

Reviews Summary

Penjerrick Garden is a fascinating, wild, and unspoilt botanical gem, lauded for its impressive plant specimens like towering tree ferns and bamboo forests. Visitors appreciate its tranquil, jungle-like atmosphere, though many note the challenging, muddy, and overgrown paths, especially in the lower garden. The broken footbridge and lack of facilities are points of caution, but the overall experience is considered magical and well worth the visit for those prepared for its rugged charm.

"Really fascinating garden with amazing plant specimens including some of the tallest tree ferns in the country and a beautiful Wollemi Pine.

The footbridge between the upper and lower garden is currently broken (rotten on far side and will eventually collapse), so use the gate to cross the road. There is hazard tape on the bridge but it looked like someone had pushed through it when we visited - I wouldn't recommend this, as falling from height in rural Cornwall when the bridge does give way probably won't go so well!

Paths in the lower garden are tricky to navigate but it's worth exploring this jungley wilderness if you are sure-footed and don't mind a bit of mud and pushing through foliage. We visited at the end of a pretty dry summer so the mud situation was perhaps more manageable than it could have otherwise been, but I could see it being very difficult in the lower garden at some times of year.

I really hope this garden gets the care and support it needs to continue long-term, as it really is a special place."

"What a place! This is the true lost garden in Cornwall, not the over commercialised Heligan. Tree ferns are amazing, never seen such large ones. Not a place for those who are not sure footed nor those whose main priority is a café (there isn't one)"

richard workman

"The hydrangeas and trees were very impressive. Big disappointment in the pond section of the gardens as paths were un-walkable and overgrown. There was confusion with maps and the signs indicating to go different ways. Overall, just needs a fair bit of care and clarity."
