What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Catcleugh Reservoir is praised for its impressive Victorian engineering and the unique historical insights offered by guided tours, especially the 'Black House'. Visitors appreciate the knowledgeable rangers and the well-preserved dam. However, the site's historical focus may not appeal to all, particularly families with very young children, and dining options are limited.
"A pleasant NNPA rangers walk taking place the first Sunday every month."
David Dixon
"There are guided walks a few times a year at the Catcleugh Reservoir. It starts at the worker's lodging house, then the building with the water gauges, the reservoir and then you drive to the local church. The guided walk cost ยฃ10 and was interesting. You get to go into the lodging hut and the visit the church where a boy is buried. If you like social history and late Victorian/early 20th century civil engineering then this is a good three hours. Children could find this a bit dull."

"We took an organised tour with Sue and Paul, local volunteer rangers. They can be booked at the Sil visitors centre. The tour gives access to the last remaining โBlack Houseโ one of the, once many, huts that housed the workers who built the dam. We also had access to parts of the site that are closed to the general public.
The guides knowledgeable presentations were so informative, detailing the everyday lives of the workers, the extensive temporary villages and the clever Victorian engineering, as beautiful as it is practical, machinery housed in magnificent buildings. And block paving neatly laid under the water. The dam was so well constructed that it still requires no maintenance. Well worth a visit."
