What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Chiltern Open Air Museum for its fascinating collection of rebuilt historic buildings and engaging themed events, offering a unique glimpse into the past. The friendly staff and volunteers, along with the children's play area and farm animals, make it a great family day out. However, some note that accessibility can be challenging on certain paths, and the rural access road requires careful navigation.
"This is a fascinating place to visit with old buildings from the local area rescued and rebuilt here. The round house is a reconstruction rather than a rebuild! Most houses are set in the era it came from. Really shows how material we are today with most of us having far too many things. Well worth going on a themed weekend - we went on a Middle Ages themed weekend. Great fun with music, dancing and jousting. We took a wheelchair with us but borrowed one of theirs. The paths can be challenging even with their wheelchair and some places are really inaccessible. Great children’s play area and toilets are dotted around the site. Do not think you are lost when driving to the museum. Access is on a very small, winding, country road which is at times single track. Well worth the effort though."

"We spent 5 hours here and could have spent more. Fascinating view of the history of Bucks brought to a single location. Ideally suited to a drier day, you walk between the houses. Inside you see (and smell) a snapshot of history."

"Father's Day outing courtesy of daughter/granddaughters. I hadn't been for years and was worried about my mobility problems, but I needn't have been. It was a real pleasure to pootle about at a leisurely place through the sylvan walks and trails, to explore the various historic buildings and exhibits, to watch demonstrations and to take part in activities, (including playing quoits and skittles in the old church hall and having a go at candle-making with the tutelage of a charming octegenarian volunteer) and to bore the children witless with nostalgic tales of yore. A band of retirees happened to be raising money for charity on the day, playing Willie Nelson style country and western music on 'the green', which was both an incongruous accompaniment to our al fresco lunch and yet somehow charmingly quirky in this otherwise quintessentially English setting."
