Looking for quiet forest/woodland areas nearby – recommendations?

Hey everyone, I'm hoping to find some nice forest or woodland areas that aren't too far away. Ideally somewhere that's not super busy β€” more of a peaceful, quiet place where you can just enjoy the trees and the sounds of nature. I'm planning to take my mother-in-law out for a…

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Chanctonbury Ring for its breathtaking panoramic views and the iconic, atmospheric circle of trees. Many find the walk rewarding and the summit a perfect spot for reflection, especially during sunset. Some note the chalky, steep path and the lack of facilities as minor drawbacks.

"Favourite place on earth. View are stunning. Shame it will be ruined when they fill in the Washington Sand quarry with waste, which is not mentioned on the map at the start of the walk; nor the hidden windmill"

Emma

"After spending great day walking South Downs, seems I'm ending my walk at the Ring. Such a lovely walk at high point with circle of trees. Have heard a lot of stories about this ancient place from the Roman times till present time. During my visit to this place, I enjoyed sunshine, clouds, rain and sunset colours all in short time of period.
If you're driving then there's car park down there. From the car park, it's around 30mins walk through trees then end of tree tunnel there's bright light at green space. Don't forget to bring your water bottle with you. Once you spend your time enjoying the views from this hill, have lil rest before heading back down."

UK Photo Journey

"High point of the South Downs, accessible by a half hour walk from the free parking area just outside Washington. From the top of the hill on a clear day, there are fantastic views east and west along the South Downs, south to the Sussex coast and north to the Surrey Hills.
The climb up the chalky path is unrelenting, but well worth it for the vista at the summit. The site has a long history and was once a hill fort. Trees have long stood on the hilltop, though many were brought down by the great storm of 1987, and most of the trees seen today were planted after this date.
Notable landmarks visible from the top include Cissbury Ring and the Brighton skyline to the southeast, and the tower on Leith Hill to the north. Also a superb place to see sunsets, particularly in winter.
There are no facilities at the parking area, so if you're planning on completing a long walk along the South Downs way it's worth bringing food and drinks."
