As seen on Countryfile! Keep your eyes peeled 👀 sometime in the next few weeks the cattle will be moving along the beach from West Bexington to Cogden! I will give as much warning as I can, but 24hrs is about the best I've managed before 🙃

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Cogden Beach for its wild, peaceful atmosphere and expansive pebble and sand shoreline, making it a favorite for dog walkers and those seeking a less crowded coastal experience. Some note the limited facilities and the tide's significant impact on beach access, advising preparedness.

"Lovely beach. Lots of sand. But the tide was😏 had to walk quite a while to reach the water (or even hear the sound of it) On the plus side, there was so much sand! And the place looked clean, and there were plenty of benches right above... The toilets cost 40p but I didn't have any coins on me, I find that disappointing because many people didn't carry coins with them anymore. There should have been an alternative way to pay."

Esti Orgel

"Beautiful, peaceful wild beach. If going with youngsters just note there are no facilities.
Beach is a beautiful soft fine pebble/pea shingle. The kids loved hunting though it looking for the best coloured stones"

Ben Weldon

"Pretty wild beach!

No facilities, not much people, wide shoreline.

Dogs are allowed without leads all year round

The parking is free for National Trust members, all others can easily pay or extend via PayByPhone app."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Exploring the Jurassic Coastline

Cogden Beach is a gem nestled within the renowned Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site stretching for 95 miles along the Dorset and East Devon coast. This area is celebrated for its spectacular rock formations and fossil discoveries, offering a glimpse into millions of years of Earth's history. The coastal path that runs near Cogden Beach provides breathtaking views and opportunities for invigorating hikes. Instagram+1

Visitors can explore the unique geology, with the beach itself showcasing a mix of pebbles and sand that shifts with the tides. The red cliffs to the east are a striking feature, contrasting with the vast expanse of the sea. It's a place where you can truly feel the power and beauty of nature, making it a must-visit for anyone interested in geology, natural landscapes, or simply a stunning coastal walk. InstagramReddit

While Cogden Beach itself isn't ideal for swimming due to its steep shelving and strong waves, its wild beauty is perfect for photography, beachcombing, and enjoying the raw, untamed coastline. The surrounding area offers more sheltered spots for swimming if desired, but Cogden's charm lies in its natural, less-developed character. Instagram

A Haven for Dog Lovers

Cogden Beach is a paradise for dog owners, consistently praised for its dog-friendly nature. The beach allows dogs to be off-lead all year round, a significant draw for those traveling with their canine companions. This freedom allows dogs to explore, run, and play to their heart's content on the expansive shoreline. InstagramReddit+2

The vastness of the beach means that even with other dogs present, there's ample space for everyone to enjoy themselves without feeling crowded. The mix of pebbles and sand provides varied terrain for dogs to explore, and the sound of the waves can be a delightful sensory experience for them. Many visitors share heartwarming photos and videos of their dogs relishing their time at Cogden. TikTokInstagram+1

When visiting with dogs, it's always wise to be mindful of other beachgoers and to ensure your dog is under control if necessary, though the open nature of Cogden Beach generally makes this less of an issue. The lack of strong currents near the shore (though swimming is not advised for humans) also means dogs can safely paddle at the water's edge. Instagram

Understanding the Tide and Beach Type

Cogden Beach is characterized by its fine pebble and shingle shoreline, interspersed with sandy patches that become more prominent as the tide recedes. This means the beach can appear very wide, with the water's edge quite distant at low tide. InstagramReddit

It's crucial to be aware of the tide times when planning your visit. At high tide, the usable beach area will be significantly reduced, and the waves will be closer. Conversely, at low tide, you'll have a vast expanse of pebbles and sand to explore, perfect for long walks and beachcombing. TikTokReddit

Due to the steep shelving and the power of the waves, Cogden Beach is not recommended for swimming. The conditions can be unpredictable and potentially hazardous. Instead, focus on enjoying the beach for its scenic beauty, walking, and dog-friendly atmosphere. Instagram
