Royal Whisky 🥃 I love a small, boutique sized distillery. And, Royal Lochnagar — in the heart of Royal Deeside — does not disappoint. Although owned by liquor giant Diageo now (the smallest distillery in the portfolio) Royal Lochnagar maintains its wee charm. Easy to see why the whisky it produces has been a Royal favorite since 1848. The distillery was awarded its Royal Warrant in 1848 when d...

"Visiting Royal Lochnagar Distillery was an absolute highlight of our trip. The distillery is charming, beautifully located, and rich in history. The tour was very well organized, with clear explanations of the whisky-making process and a welcoming atmosphere throughout. We especially appreciated how everything was presented with such detail and passion, which made the experience both educational and enjoyable. "On my way to visit the Balmoral Castle, I was recommended to see this place for tasting. As you recognise, this place has got “royal” title which is quite rare among the distilleries. Once I stepped in, the staff was amazing and very helpful. I ve also got nice tricks for tasting a scotch and my point of view to whiskey is totally positively changed. I know what I am not supposed to do while drinking scotch anymore ☺️
Thanks everyone there"

"Hung out with Stuart (guide) here for an afternoon. Wonderfully self-deprecating humor, he had.

Lovely walk from the castle nearby and you get 15% off if you show your castle ticket.

Incredibly mild, but still complex whiskies. Great old distillery with lots of history, exposed stone and wood. I think I’ll have another."

A Royal Heritage

Royal Lochnagar Distillery holds a special place in Scottish whisky history, not just for its spirit but for its prestigious royal connections. Founded in 1845 as New Lochnagar, it was renamed Royal Lochnagar after a visit from Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1848, who were so impressed they granted it a royal warrant. This historical significance is palpable as you walk through the distillery, which remains Diageo's smallest and one of its most traditional. The distillery's proximity to Balmoral Castle, the monarch's Scottish residence, further cements its royal ties. Instagram+2

This heritage is reflected in the distillery's operations and its whisky. Despite being owned by a major corporation, Royal Lochnagar retains a 'wee charm' and a commitment to traditional methods. Visitors often remark on the passion and detail with which the staff present the whisky-making process and the history of the distillery. The whiskies themselves are known for their light, fruity, and complex character, a style that has evidently pleased royal palates for generations. Instagram+2

Experiencing Royal Lochnagar is more than just a distillery tour; it's a step back in time to appreciate a piece of Scottish heritage that is intertwined with the British monarchy. The intimate scale of the distillery, combined with its rich history and the quality of its spirit, makes for a truly memorable visit for any whisky enthusiast or history buff. Instagram+1

The Art of Royal Lochnagar Whisky

The whisky produced at Royal Lochnagar is characterized by its delicate and approachable profile. It's often described as light, fruity, and complex, with tasting notes that can include hints of orchard fruits, honey, and a subtle sweetness. This distinct character is attributed to the distillery's traditional production methods and the use of crystal-clear water from the Scarnock springs. Instagram+1

During a tasting, visitors have the opportunity to sample various expressions, often including the core 12 Year Old bottling, which is a benchmark for the distillery's style. Guides like Stuart and Marie are frequently praised for their expertise and engaging delivery, offering valuable insights into the nuances of each dram and providing tips on how to best appreciate the whisky. This educational aspect significantly enhances the tasting experience, as noted by many visitors who found their perspective on whisky tasting positively changed. InstagramReddit

For those looking for something special, Royal Lochnagar also releases limited editions and special bottlings, such as the 16 Years mentioned in some reviews, which can offer a deeper dive into the distillery's capabilities and showcase unique cask influences. These bottlings are often sought after by collectors and enthusiasts alike. Instagram
