As we’ve mentioned for 2024 there will be a diversion for the High Peak 40 as the bridge at Cressbrook Mill is closed. The turning onto Monsal Trail is a little hidden so I’ve made this video to show how to get there. Coming soon will be video walkthroughs of the entire course but for now here’s the diversion.

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Cressbrook Mill's beautiful location and the stunning countryside walks available, particularly along the River Wye and the Monsal Trail. The recent reopening of the footbridge has greatly improved access. Some note the mill's dark history and advise respecting it as a private residential area.

"It's in a beautiful spot, but with a dark history of child slavery.
The clock face has glass in the middle so the kids who had to sleep in the roof had some light.
It is apartments now, very nice too. Great walks in the countryside to be had.
Don't walk around the mill grounds ,the residents get very emotional and insist it's private ground, but they can't stop you looking. 🤗"

Stephen Stiles

"A friend rented a room here over the weekend.

Great room and bonus playroom in the Bobbin Mill.

Air hockey, pool, full size snooker table, ping-pong etc!

Playroom shuts at 10pm and we got 2 parking spaces with more available on the road outside the mill if needed."

"Absolutely beautiful location.
Breathtaking"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History and Transformation of Cressbrook Mill

Cressbrook Mill stands as a testament to the industrial revolution, but also carries a somber history. Originally built in the late 18th century, it was a significant cotton mill that, like many of its era, relied on child labor. The infamous 'glass in the middle' of the roof was reportedly to allow some light to the children sleeping in the attics. Reddit This dark past contrasts sharply with its present-day reality as a beautifully converted residential complex. The transformation has preserved the architectural grandeur while repurposing the space for modern living. Reddit

Visitors can still appreciate the imposing structure and its riverside setting. The mill's location on the River Wye and its proximity to the Monsal Trail make it a picturesque spot. However, it's crucial to remember that it is now a private residence. While the heritage is undeniable, respecting the privacy of the current inhabitants is paramount. Reddit The surrounding countryside offers a starkly different, more peaceful experience, with walking trails that invite exploration and appreciation of nature's beauty.

Exploring the area around Cressbrook Mill offers a chance to reflect on the region's industrial past and its evolution. The Monsal Trail, a former railway line, provides a fantastic way to experience the landscape, passing through tunnels and over viaducts. Instagram+1 For those interested in local history and scenic walks, Cressbrook Mill serves as a fascinating starting point or a point of interest along a longer journey through the Peak District. Instagram

Cressbrook Mill is a fantastic hub for outdoor enthusiasts, offering access to several rewarding walking and cycling routes. The most notable is the Monsal Trail, a traffic-free path that stretches for 8.5 miles along a former railway line. Instagram+1 This trail is perfect for both walkers and cyclists, featuring impressive viaducts and dark tunnels, offering a unique perspective of the Peak District. The reopening of the Cressbrook Mill footbridge has significantly improved access to this trail and other local paths. Instagram+1

Beyond the Monsal Trail, the Cressbrook Dale itself provides beautiful, often lower-level walking opportunities. Many visitors enjoy circular walks that combine the dale with nearby Litton Mill. Instagram+2 These routes are often described as family-friendly and suitable for dog walkers, with varied scenery including riverside paths and limestone valleys. Instagram+1 Some routes are noted as being approximately 6-9 miles long and can take around 3-3.5 hours to complete, depending on stops. Instagram+1

When planning your excursion, be aware that mobile phone signal can be unreliable in the area, so downloading offline maps is highly recommended. Instagram+1 The experience of walking or cycling here is often described as peaceful and scenic, with the limestone valleys offering distinct character on different sections of the route. Instagram
